Board favors same-sex ban

LUMBERTON — The Robeson County Board of Commissioners has thrown its support behind the upcoming state constitutional amendment aimed at maintaining the definition of marriage as being between one man and one woman. Although same-sex marriage is already barred by state law, if North Carolina voters favor the amendment, the ban would be added to the state constitution.

According to Commissioner David Edge, acting at the request of state Rep. G.L. Pridgen, the commissioners have been informally polled by phone to determine their support for a resolution supporting passage of the constitutional amendment. Edge said the poll was taken last week, and the commissioners have agreed to endorse the amendment through a resolution that would be adopted on election eve.

“The Robeson County Board of Commissioners endorses the proposed Marriage Amendment to the North Carolina Constitution which states that the only domestic legal union that is valid or recognized in North Carolina is marriage between one man and one woman,” the amendment reads.

The commissioners will formally vote on the resolution at their next regular monthly meeting on May 7, the day before the primary.

Last month, a similar resolution supporting the amendment was passed by Robeson County Republicans at their party convention.

John McNeill, chairman of the county’s Democratic Party, said Wednesday that the local Democratic organization has not formally endorsed a similar resolution. He said such a resolution would have had to come before Democrats at their recent party convention to have been considered.

“No delegate to the convention submitted such a resolution for consideration,” McNeill said.

The Robeson County Board of Commissioners joins several other county board that have gone on record supporting the amendment: the Orange County Board of Commissioners has gone on record opposing it.

it amuses me that people talk about christians judging, how are they judging by saying it is wrong? The Bible clearly states that homosexuality is an abomination under God, The Bible is God's word so all christians are doing is repeating God's word the judgement was passed by God not the Christian, As a Christian we are suppose to stand up for God's word, you will also hear people say that that is old testament beliefs well didn't Jesus say that he came to fulfill the law not to change it, People need to read their Bible more instead of just leaving it on a shelf, I admit yes we are not suppose to judge, The Bible says let he who is without sin cast the first stone, As Christians we should pray for these people not condemn them, for once we was also lost in this world and doomed for hell and some one prayed for us, The Bible tells us as Christians our best is no more then filfthy rags, this world needs prayer not finger pointing and before we can clean someone elses front porch first we must learn to clean our own God bless you all and thanks for reading

O just don't get this. All the problems and things wrong in this country and people are worried about stupid crap like this. My god if two people feel for each other then let it be why worry about peoples feelings, its not gonna change the way they are made or what they feel for. But people scream and shout about how they are Cristians and this and that yet they JUDGE people about who and what they like or feel for. I hope every person that voted for this nonsense or even had anything to do with it has a child or close family member that turns out or decides to be gay!! God bless America!!! This country will be like Syria before long because of stupidness as this.

It's not a same-sex marriage ban. It's an endorsement of traditional marriage. Amendment One doesn't say anything about same-sex marriage. It simply states that the state only recognizes marriage as being a union between a man and a woman. As a result, ANY union different than that is not recognized as marriage. To say it specifically bans or targets same-sex marriage seems to be an attempt to portray the bill negatively. Similar to someone saying Pro-Abortion instead of Pro-Choice.

Typical Christian garbage, stop judging and forcing your beliefs and morals on others when it does not concern you at all.

God prefers kind gay's over hateful, hypocrite Christians.

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.
