GREENVILLE — A former driver’s license examiner at the Division of Motor Vehicles office in Lumberton has been sentenced to prison for taking bribes in exchange for issuing fake IDs to people, and two other people have pleaded guilty to helping him.

Pablo Sarmiento, 53, of Church Street in Fairmont, was sentenced in federal court in Greenville to six months in prison and two years supervised release with special conditions, according to a spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Justice.

Sarmiento pleaded guilty in January to a felony count of Social Security fraud for an offense that occurred on Aug. 17, 2011, the spokeswoman said. Two other people, Francisco Salome-Ramirez and Jamie Cortes-Gonzalez, have pleaded guilty to Social Security fraud and eluding examination and inspection by immigration.

Salome-Ramirez, 41, of Beam Road in Lumberton, was sentenced last week to 10 months in prison and three years supervised release. Cortes-Gonzalez, 31, of N.C. 20 in St. Pauls, is awaiting sentencing.

Salome-Ramirez and Cortes-Gonzalez obtained forged and duplicated Social Security cards, birth certificates and other identification documents that belonged to real people, according to the indictment. The documents were then sold to people so they could obtain photo identification, including state-issued ID cards and driver’s licenses. Salome-Ramirez and Cortes-Gonzalez then allegedly charged the people a fee to steer them to Sarmiento’s workstation at the DMV office.

The indictment says that Sarmiento was paid by Salome-Ramirez and Cortes-Gonzalez to approve and process the photo identification based on the fake documents.

According to the indictment, once the individuals received the photo identification, they were able to assume the identity of the people whose identifies were stolen.

A DMV spokeswoman said that Sarmiento had been a DMV license examiner in the Fayetteville district from May 8, 2004, to Oct. 6, 2011, when he resigned. He had been on leave since Sept. 30 during an investigation, she said.

According to court documents, Salome-Ramirez and Cortes-Gonzalez are illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. from Mexico through Arizona, in 2001 and 1996, respectively.

Boo Hoo. If he served 20 years in the military he was one sorry troop. If he is receiving a pension I hope it is supended while he does his time. As far as your sorry pitty party of I know his charactor and he's a good man, that's just you trying to justify what he did. He wasn't a minor or a idiot. The only person he was helping was himself. He wasn't a hero for providing false paperwork, just a criminal.

My father has always been and will continue to be a good man even after his prison time. What he did was wrong and he knows that, we his family have accepted that also. Disgustedinrobeson after reading your comments and BBBD it disgusts me because I know the type of man my father is. He spent 20 yrs in the military fighting for you and I so we can be free, and live the so called "american dream." Id' s were issued so people could go and get a job, so they wouldn't fill up the social services department and receive food stamps, TANF, medicaid and everything else that is freely given to those who walk through the door and have no desire to work or make a better life for themselves. We americans have become lazy and don't know what real work is! We look for handouts around every corner. While this doesn't apply to everyone it pertains to a large group. There are plenty of "illegals" as they are described that would love to wake up at the crack of dawn every morning go to work and work 10-12 hrs a day to help support their families and live the american dream that we take for granted and yes even pay taxes to a country that makes it difficult to live here and do it the "right way" What my father did was wrong and I am not making excuses for him. I am able to look at the bigger picture and realize how things like this can happen. I as well as my family will continue to pray for those that this affected the "good people" that their identities were stolen and ask that everyone pray for me and my family and the "good" man that made a mistake. I will continue to defend my fathers name because this error in judgement does not define him as the person he is. I am proud to call him dad and that will never change despite the mistake he has made.

Insarmiento, you should defend your father and appreciate him, mine has been gone for 8 years now. I do appreciate every military person no matter what, however had this been a one time thing it might would be understandable but I have worked since age 12 and my father was a hard working man as well but he never did anything against the law other than a few traffic tickets but when you take a person's id and affect their social security or anything that belongs to someone else IT IS WRONG. Granted I think the TANF, food stamps and all the other giveaway programs are a joke and tick me off as a taxpayer they were developed to help those in need but what he did is no different than the millions of others that get these giveaways through deception. Your dad is just ONE that got caught and how many did he get away with and how many more would he have done had he not gotten caught. I too am a state employee and the state employees that do the actual work do not get paid near enough where the people in the higher offices get so much money it makes you sick but right is right and wrong is wrong. You defend your dad that is what you are supposed to do I am sorry that you and the other members of your family are paying the price instead of it just being your dad, how many "illegals" has he helped that get out here and drive and have accidents and the innocent people involved had to pay with their own finances or even worse, their health. I wish you the best but I stick by what I have said, prison and deportation. Hopefully the government will get many more.

My point was there is a difference between a mistake and doing something intentionally, knowing it is wrong. Your father may have wanted to help people, but if that involves hurting others (stolen SS#), then no good has come of it. I don't condemn your father, he has been caught and punished. That's enough.

Everybody makes mistakes from time to time but crap like this affects all americans in some way or another if in no other way taxes will be increased to make up for this kind of thing. This man should go to jail and any of the people he helped should go to jail as well and the ones that are illegal need to be DEPORTED....LEt them do things the right way like everyone else.

Good people make mistakes, but this was a premeditated crime that lasted over an extended period of time. It's a good idea to pray for him, but also remember to pray for the victims whose identities were stolen by "good people."

All he did was disavowal the LEGAL LAWS of this country. Pray for him if you wish. He wasn't a minor or an idiot; he knew what he was doing. He was just someone that was caught, another crook. That's the only thing that stopped the money from flowing into his pocket. Not moral character, religious piety, not an epiphany of some higher consciousness. What stopped him, just the act of being caught. No matter how many times his family does the Richard Nixon and cries "I'm not a crook" it doesn't change the facts...

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.

As I read this article then all these comments. I AM DISCUSTED...How dare ANY of you!!!! My brother was a great guy, no one was in the car with him, you didn't offer to drive him nor ride, yet choose to come on here & talk about him in a negative fashion is TOTAL DISRESPECT to all his FAMILY. This story was not about my brother yet about a dealership that was ran into & that is the story the Newspaper has chosen to run. They have that right. But for those of you that feel my brother killed himself? Be for real, if you know Lumberton you know there was NO WAY my brother was doing 90mph hence why there is an investigation. Did my brother like to drink, drive fast on a race track, & have a good time? ABSOLUTLY!!!! & many of you partied with him, then come on here & talk about him. If you have NOTHING positive to say about him KEEP YOUR DARN MOUTH SHUT!!!!! You did not lose a father, son, brother or uncle in this so keep your opinions respectful whether you mean it or not out of RESPECT for my brother, PATRICK LYNN MORGAN!!!!!

I agree with you MadeInBladen. I don't have a problem with them giving money to the communities. Its easy to say what you would do when you're not in that position. Looks like we have a bunch of armchair quarterbacks around here.

Why get rid of the funds, What about the kids who want to play little league and can't afford it? I understand that the commissioners know that it is the taxpayers money and it is going back to the community.
