RALEIGH — A Chapel Hill man has been accused of impersonating a bail bondsman in Robeson County after he allegedly took a man into custody in Rowland who was not wanted by authorities.
Barry Eugene Hicks, 53, of 7115 Old Greensboro Road in Chapel Hill, was charged with kidnapping, felonious restraint, obtaining property by false pretense and impersonating a bail bondsman. He was placed in the Robeson County jail under $32,500 bond.
According to a statement by the Department of Insurance, Hicks on March 4 claimed to be working for a bail bonding company in Robeson County and took a man into custody in Rowland. Hicks’ bail bonding license had been revoked on March 2, the statement said.
A Robeson County magistrate determined the man was not wanted by the bonding company and had no criminal record, and he was released, according to the statement. The statement did not identify the man.
Hicks was arrested on Wednesday. His next court date is May 7.
