ORRUM — A 67-year-old Orrum man has been arrested and charged with maintaining a marijuana-growing operation consisting of 1,900 plants valued at $7.2 million, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Charles Edward Hammonds Sr., of 751 Proctorville Church Road, is charged with trafficking a controlled substance, maintaining a dwelling for controlled substances and conspiracy to traffic in a controlled substance. He is out on a $25,000 secured bond.

According to a statement from the Department of Transportation, an inspector from the Division of Motor Vehicles was examining a vehicle at Hammonds’ home on Thursday when he saw marijuana plants growing near the home. Robeson County sheriff’s Lt. Randy Johnson, who assisted in the investigation, said the plants were found growing among other foliage in multiple locations on the property.

The investigation is ongoing.

@Thomas Parker: Sticks and stones might break my bones, but whatever a PARKER says makes me laugh. Except for the late Capt. Jerry Parker. HE was the LAST good one. That's what I think.

Yeah, 1900 pot plants plucked in Orrum, and that thing in the picture looks like it smoked 1900 more.

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.
