LUMBERTON — A Maxton woman is accused of the shooting death of a man early Friday that followed an argument, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Ruth Ann Jones Moreno, 47, of Papa’s Drive, was charged with second-degree murder and placed in the Robeson County jail without bond.
According to sheriff’s Maj. Howard Branch, Moreno and her daughter went to the home of Michael Conrad Ray, 51, at 844 Old Baker Road, to discuss “an incident with a child.” Branch would not comment further on the alleged incident.
“She stays across the field, basically, about a half mile from him,” Branch said. “She and her daughter had walked over to his residence and confronted him, then the daughter left the mother there.”
Sometime after that, about 3 a.m., Moreno got a shotgun and fired it at Ray one time, killing him, Branch said. It is not known who owns the gun or where Moreno got it, he said.
Moreno returned to her home and called 911, Branch said. There was no one else in Ray’s home when the shooting occurred.
Moreno has a file with the N.C. Department of Correction that includes assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a female and second-degree trespassing.
