LUMBERTON — The Robeson County Board of Commissioners will be asked Monday to provide Robeson Community College with $341,000 so the school can pay its bills for the months of May and June.

In a letter to interim County Manager Ricky Harris, RCC President Charles Chrestman said that as of May 1 the college had expended all of its county funding for 2011-12 operations and maintenance. Without approval of the $341,000 supplemental budget request, the college cannot pay its May and June bills, Chrestman said.

Chrestman stated in his letter that the projected expenses for operations and maintenance for the current fiscal year will be about $2,283,362. The college’s original request for county support was for $2,221,098.

According to Chrestman, who will address the commissioners Monday, a large portion of the additional expense has been for repairs to aging HVAC systems and increases in energy costs.

The commissioners will also be asked to support the creation of a BUILD — Brothers United in Learning & Development — program in Lumberton. BUILD is a non-profit with a mission to assist youths by teaching them job skills, social skills and to give them an outlet where they can attain positive results through homework assistance, mentoring and training, according to Nathaniel Stubbs, the organization’s executive director.

In a written description of the program, Stubbs said that his organization needs seed money to secure the site of its future home at 150 Eden Ave. He said the organization’s target market is youths ages 8 to 18 who are performing below state academic standards and are at risk for dropping out of school.

“We will also reach out to local businesses and communities to help us help our children,” Stubbs said. “We want this to be a community effort as we will be seeking volunteers to help us manage the various programs offered through BUILD.”

On Monday the commissioners are also expected to:

— Recognize employees who have worked for the county 30 or more years.

— Hold a public hearing on the Robeson County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan & Resolution.

After the regular meeting, the commissioners will hold a budget work session.

The meeting will be held beginning at 6 p.m. at the county administration building on North Elm Street.

Tax dollars needed again when you have people walking around with I pads, and other un needed technology that's all good but don't you think people needs their money that is paying taxes to supply money. It is an election year, so don't forget that. Leave tax money where the people can spend it, shape up RCC stopped using money like it is growing on trees.

Needing money for the Build program? NO! I think it's a waste of taxpayer money. We had programs of the same nature e.g. YO PROGRAM. So I feel it's a waste. Just my opinion......

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.

In regards to FULL Federal Recognition for the Lumbee tribe, I believe we ARE long overdue! To my fellow Lums: If you have a problem with the tribal government, get involved! Not ALL Lums are greedy, and not all Tribal Council members are corrupt. You must trust your decisions & have faith that the people YOU elect are the right individuals to get the job done in an ethical fashion. If not, then run for it yourself & make a change!! Last but not least, to the "individuals" who wish to REMAIN ignorant to the Lumbee culture & history: Just remember that your public ignorance is more damaging than greed, lies, and any other problem combined. I suppose you still believe that Christopher Columbus discovered America and the moon is really made of cheese... How silly of you to promote discrimination in this day and age.

So Woods & Cummings wrote your department a PERSONAL check? Otherwise I believe that money came from the taxpayers of Robeson County and NOT Woods and Cummings. You should be thanking the taxpayers.

Robeson County pays enough taxes that our agencies should not depend on the commissioners for handouts. Get real when a real budget is put together to keep the commissioners from taking our tax dollars to by votes then we won't settle for the slithering around saying here is a little donation. IT IS OUR MONEY THEY ARE HANDING OUT. In 24yrs what has he done for our economy, education, and crimerate. OH 100 out of 100. We can stop there. It gets worse. I pray Faline blows him back to the big house where he resides. JUST SAY NO TO BUYING VOTES. Wake up RESCUEBOY. He gave you your own money back!!!!!
