Car dealer charged with drug crimes
by Kelly Mayo
Staff writer

LUMBERTON — A prominent Lumberton businessman has been charged with drug crimes following a traffic stop on Monday, according to the Sheriff Office.

Sheriff Kenneth Sealey said 70 units of prescription pills were found in a car belonging to Leland Fields Fuller, 41, of Grande Oaks Boulevard. Fuller is general manager and part owner of Lumberton Honda, which is located at 301 Wintergreen Drive in North Lumberton.

According to Sealey, the drugs were found after Fuller, who was driving a red 2005 Lotus sports car, was seen speeding in a 55-mph zone on Mount Olive Church Road. Sealey said as Deputy Nakiea Wearins interviewed Fuller, Detective David Thompson saw Fuller hide something in his clothing.

A drug-sniffing dog was called and found a bottle of prescription pills under the floor mat and another bottle in Leland’s clothing, according to Sealey. Sealey said that the dealership and Fuller’s home were also searched, but no other drugs were found.

Fuller was charged with trafficking opium or heroin by possession, trafficking opium or heroin by transporting, possession with an intent to sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance, maintaining a drug vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released after posting a $30,000 bond and made his first court appearance on Tuesday.

Sealey said the case is still under investigation by the Narcotics Division.

The Robesonian called the dealership on Tuesday and asked if Fuller or his lawyer would like to comment, but never received a call back.

Fuller, who appears in television commercials for the dealership, is known for his generosity in the community.

Lumberton Honda participates in the United Way’s annual Car Giveaway for fair-share givers, and recently he participated as a dancer for the United Way’s Dancing with the Robeson County Stars, which raises money for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. He and his dancing partner raised the third most money of the 18 dancing pairs, and then Fuller paid for an after-party celebration for participants at his dealership, an event that was held last week.

One word sums up why this happened to Leland...Karma...most people are aware of the charitable donations that the business has made, and of the personal time that he has given to various causes, but most are not aware of other things that he has been doing over the last couple of years, most of which I won't mention. This is a true case of a Jekyll and Hyde personality. There are many half truths and speculations, and outright false statements on many of the previous 60 or 70 comments. Leland is not a drug dealer. He does have a drug problem, as well as some of his friends and immediate family. And maybe this is the wake up call he needed to get his life back on track. He has carried himself in a manner that most would consider him feeling he was "above the law". Who leaves a drug dealers house after purchasing drugs traveling nearly 100 mph during a time when school buses are on the road unless they feel they will not be pulled over, and if they do, they will be able to use their public image to get out of it? I will not mention his family life further, out of respect for him and his wife, but that would spark more discussion than this incident. And to correct a previous poster, Leland was minority owner of the dealership, and the majority owners from Florida flew up the following day to begin the buyout process, meaning Leland is no longer associated with Lumberton Honda. His passport has been pulled, and his employees have found every record of charitable donations possible to provide to his attorney, to offset the current charges. This will go a long way for him in the sentencing phase, probably allowing him to avoid jail time. A stint in rehab, probation, fines and court costs, and a suspended sentence will more than likely be the outcome. There are a lot of various opinions of Leland on here, and most are right. He is good to the people close to him, he has given his time and the company's money to help organization's in Lumberton, but remember, that is also a marketing tactic. And the other opinions are also correct, he is guilty, he should pay for his crime, and he should turn his life around. It is not for us to judge him. Two people will do that. A judge in Robeson County and God himself. He has already lost his share of the business and his position of General Manager and has suffered great embarassment. That's the facts. Do I feel sorry for him, No. Should you? That is totally up to you. That is why we are free to express our opinions on this site, and in everyday life without consequence, unless of course those opinions involve a county commissioner, in which case you are on your own!

You are nosey, tell stories and are one jealous busy-body who spreads rumors in a small town.

How do you know so much? Typical crap spread by poor people who are "haters"(poor person's word).

You know all this about him and he knows nothing about you or even who you are.

Just for the record, Karma is well deserved in this case......he will be able to buy his way out of jail time and get most if not all of his charges reduced but he will Never be able to buy his reputation back.

To be continued.... This is just the beginning of what's to come with some of the predominant business men in Lumberton! No matter how kind hearted you are or how much money you make. Your still not above the law!

Want to bet on that? It's your hope that it will happen, but this was an isolated incident.

If you run the numbers most drug crimes are to lower income uneducated people. VERY seldom does the wealthy businessman get involved with anything criminal. They are too busy working and providing jobs to the poor.....

I know most of you on here are jealous of this man and his wealth and you want to see him fried. But it ain't gonna happen.

Majority of rich people are rich for a reason, they're not stupid. Mistakes happen, so what. It's none of your business, he supports himself...and will continue. HE OWNS THE DEALERSHIP.

Ross: Then how do you suppose he was nabbed with an intent to sell charge? Also, it is a small town and things are known beyond what is just written in a newspaper article. You can trust me on this one. I'd let Leland have his drug money and pass on the christmas bonus.
ROSSisRIGHT

May 17, 2013
Anytime you have over 10 pills with no prescription, they are charged with "intent to sell". That's how.

Listen, I know most of you jealous people want so bad to believe he made his money illegally. BUT HE DIDN'T, HE EARNED HIS WEALTH. Those pills were for his personal use, and he owns himself so...SO WHAT!

Get over the mans money, and stop it with your hate(dumb persons word). The man is self made, just like any of you could be if you chose to. But most of you choose to be jealous of others success while you sit on your but doing nothing to advance your position in life. Sad.

The man's a self made millionaire. Most of you aren't. Most of you smoke, over eat, eat grease, are fat, won't work, etc.. You are destroying YOU, and it ain't nobody's business.(unless you're on welfare)

The same goes for this man and his pills...(and he's never been on welfare)

May 16, 2013
Anyone who thinks that receiving drug money as a generous "christmas bonus" or any form of charity is just as pathetic as the dealer. The guy sells drugs, no question about it. A mistake isn't repeatedly selling drugs out of the house that children live in. That is a choice.
ROSSisRIGHT
|
May 16, 2013
Getmehere245: The man does not sell drugs egg head. Do you see how easily you people spread a rumor? You want so badly to believe he's a drug dealer you convince yourself that you read it.

He had a few pills for his personal use...period.

He wasn't on welfare, or foodstamps and didn't live in government housing so it's none of your business. I don't care what people do as long as it doesn't infringe on me or endanger me. He did neither and he has a job to support himself so who cares? He owns himself.

There, that's the difference between a regular criminal and him.

@Ross...he did have 2 bottles and he was speeding...opiates equal reduced reaction time combined with the responsiveness of a Lotus could have very easily become a nasty mess. So he may have been endangering others...although getting hit by a lotus would only be slightly worse than getting hit by a golf cart...

orighawk: Endangering people? We all can't walk around in plastic bubble wrap for protection. Just getting in a car is dangerous. A poor person behind the wheel of a car poses more danger to the public than him and pills. Everything in life is dangerous.

I personally think a persons income and education should allow more leeway with certain laws, especially speeding laws. We are always in a hurry, we have business to take care of, we are VERY responsible and have insurance, so why should we always have to obey the speed limit? We drive better than low income people, make them obey it and leave us alone. Also I believe auto insurance should be based on income. The more wealth a person has earned the more smarter he is(statistically speaking). So this makes him a more responsible driver. The poor should be paying through the teeth, since most can't drive.

Run the numbers and stats on wrecks and income. This is a fact: The higher the income the less likely to be at fault in a wreck, fact. When's the last time you saw a current year Mercedes or Cadillac at fault in a wreck around here. It's usually old raggedy clunk mobils packed with people and junk on the rear dash. Most injuries to the poor don't come from the impact of the wreck, but from the flying french-fries and crap all over the car. Fact.

I really can't believe what I am reading. @ROSSisRIGHT, I hope that you don't really believe that wealth should make anyone above the law!? That is outrageous! I am ALMOST at a loss for words after reading such an ignorant rant! If you are against crime, then you are against it. Not just against crime in "poor" communities. No one seems to think about the BIG picture. Somewhere a big time drug dealer is getting rich. Large quantities of such opiates are usually bought off the streets, not from the local pharmacy. Big time drug dealing, just trickles down to the street thugs that you so often persecute. And you were right before, I'm sure his lawyer probably is getting rich, since that's probably who he bought them from given the location of his traffic stop. I have no doubts that he is a nice person, lets face it, high on opiates he would have no care in the world. Donations, expensive christmas gifts and large bonuses for employees?? Sounds like tax write offs and a way to move the money around to me! Cocaine, heroine, opiates have always been popular among the wealthy in society. BUT a drug addict is a drug addict. Coke head and crack head, no differences. Money can buy a lot of things, but addiction does not discriminate amount social class!

& before you DARE try to accuse me, like you have so many others, of being fat, lazy, or living off the system. I will go ahead and correct you! I go to work everyday, do not receive, nor have I ever, any services afford to so many others. And, no I am not the least bit jealous of someone who obviously lives with his own demons.

@Ross, first of all I do not know this man, but wish him the best with his inner demons.

Now, you Ross have contradicted yourself here. I lurk on here and read your comments. One breath your condemning people about drug use ( I don't disagree) and the next breath you're saying he had pills for his own personal use and "so what".

I don't even want to get started on the whole "wealthy are more responsible drivers" thing.

Any credibility you may have had has gone out the door. I always gave you the benefit of the doubt.

It is better to let people think you are a fool.... you know the rest. Tsk-tsk, my friend.

lumbyman2013: WRONG! I have never, REPEAT never "condemned anyone for doing drugs". I DON"T CARE, and this is America and I believe in freedom. You own YOU and you can abuse yourself however you see fit.

Now to clarify for you, I do not condone illegal activities and crime associated with drugs and selling drugs, that being said, what you do behind your closed doors IS NONE ON NOBODY'S BUSINESS.(I.E. gay people too)

Whenever you have doubt about something I would disagree with or agree with, always resort back to freedom, that'll get the answer every time.

I do admonish the poor government dependent's who rely on MY tax money for food. Also the crimes associated with gang activity because of drugs and the poor using them. They can't afford it and are forcing me to pay for it? Get off welfare and I'll get out your business.

Pay attention to what I say and you'll never go wrong. Tsk,tsk....what the world does that mean......

Puulleese: You said I "accuse so many others of living off the system" right before you accused so many "others of living off the system"....

Here is one thing that will happen..if Mr, Fuller was dealing and turns state evidence..he will get a free ride per say...if he was using..his money will buy him a rehad clinic (no other arrests)either way..this is our judicial system...i say,...instead of locking him up..let him help educate on the drug abuse..and take the 25,000 and use it somewhere else...he can do it for free. And just so happens...the road he was pulled over on...a drug dealer has been busted over there....and thats a good thing. need to start busting dr's also...

Busting doctors for what? When YOU lie to a doctor, how do we know? They only go by what the patient tells them.

It's people like you that are making doctors pick and choose who their patients are. More and more discharge letters being sent out to the ones who lie for pills. Call up a doctor around here and see if they wont tell you "we're not taking any new patients".....

I try to look at these things from a neutral position. No what Leland did was not good. Based on the information given, he should pay for what he has done. There is no question about that. This is very serious. Understand that prescription abuse has now surpassed drinking and other drugs killing our youth today. If you look at this from an “actions” point of view there is very little to argue.

Now Leland as a person: Let me make clear, no amount of money given or kind hearted actions justify a person’s illegal action. This is just how it is. That is why it’s called LAW. Leland is a good person and does have a very kind heart but he will have to be punished for what he did. Now if that happens I don’t know, but that’s an issue with our legal system.

We all have demons in our closet. One day, some how, we will have to answer to them. When you look at your neighbor and friends, face the reality that everything is not what it seems. I don’t justify what he has done but hope that when all this passes he is able to get his life back on track.

Friends of Leland, support him during this time. Help him get back on track and defeat those demons.

Opponents of Leland, you have a right to be upset over his actions and major issues surrounding this nation wide problem. Be mad at that though, not the fact that a person with money was caught or that it was “some one on the other side of the tracks” as some one said. Stop trying to make this a societal placement issue. It always seems to go that direction in these conversations and only diminishes your argument. Simply, hope that he pays for what he did and that some day he can get his life back together.

I presume this will come out in the trial, but a good news article would have made it clear whether he:

1. Had someone else's pain pills on him (and not a family member)

2. Was he under the influence of said pills?

3. Was he trying to sell them, either his own or pills under another name.

And I too was surprised a out the dog. I would think the only way the dog could find them is if the bottle had been opened in the car, either for taking them there, or selling them there.

ID like to see more flesh put on this story. And to those wo talk about him being good to folks and employees, that's all well and good, but if he's out there selling this and getting people hooked, or if he himself is driving his little sports car under the influence, then the man has got to pay the price. He obviously evidently knew better, in trying to hid the bottle.

I worked at Lumberton Honda and Lumberton Kia, both of his stores up until last month. I have seen Leland do good things. He cared about customer's and wanted to help people. If you are complaining about the commercials hey it's business. If you messed up our credit that's on you. We tried to help people out the best we could. Back to Leland, when we had Christmas parties for the dealerships, he would go out and spend thousands of dollars on gifts for the employees and give nice Christmas bonuses. His way of showing his appreciation for us all. Leland is a quiet guy. Never raised his voice. Really nice guy to talk to. I have worked for several employers who were not half the person he is. If an employee had problems with family, money, or otherwise, he would do his best to help them out. I never needed any help in that manner but I know several recipients of his kindness who I worked with over the years. I was in that organization for 6 years. I have seen Leland do so much for the community and the people of Robeson county. He was always participating in and donating money services and cars to help out. Small minded people here want to crucify him but I'm sure he's already punishing himself. Trust me, no punishment can be as severe as what I'm sure he's going through. He has a wife and kids to think about. I'm not saying that he was perfect but he's still human and people do make mistakes. I'm sure some of you who want to talk down on him have been down the same roads before. If you want to knock him, look in the mirror and examine yourselves and your own faults first. And if you are a true Christian which I'm sure most of you will claim, then don't go throwing stones unless you are without sin. As for me, I'll be praying for him and his family.

imdraco, you have hit the nail on the head. No can judge us but our Lord. Mr. Fuller made his mistake and he will be the one to pay for it. Everyone deserves a 2nd chance. I am sure with proper counseling he will correct his wrongs. Alot of folks face these demons and continue to live a peaceful, proper life. We know you can do this Mr. Fuller. Keeping you and your family in our prayers. PS there are so many Drs. that easily give out Pain Pills, etc..causing an addiction to them, THIS NEEDS TO STOP.... @LD-We tried to help people out the best we could. REALLY? If you were really concerned about people you would make the minimal amount on the sale, passing the savings over to the customer, you wouldn't mark up for the benefit of your own pocket, and you wouldn't sell cars to people you know aren't able to afford them anyway. You and I both agree that people shouldn't be throwing stones. But, in reality people throw them at others who are less influential and the highly influential get a pass. Don't worry, no time will be given out here. We have heard the last of this case. Remember in Robeson County everything comes with a price.

There is no excuse for what this moron Did, i don't care what service he provided to the community. Putting dope into the hands of whoever he sold it to is the last thing this forlorn county needs. All I can say is I hope he likes orange jumpsuits and needs a girlfriend!

I am assuming the pill bottles did not have his name on them. Robesonian, please complete the story with details like this. This guy has just ruined his life most likely over this. Hopefully he can be an object lesson.

Who said he was dealing, I'm saying everyone who is dealing with a drug addiction needs medical help .I'm sure his intentions weren't to turn into a pill popper. Every family has someone in it that has made a mistake, unless you are God,your judgement means little. The strong family and friends he has, he is lucky to have support from so many . He will overcome this in time, counseling he will receive, and Im sure his family is already hurt from his addiction. With prayer, all things are possible, and he deserves the chance to get some help and Im sure he will get the best..GOOD LUCK MR.FULLER PS Ive never met the guy or bought any cars from him,I am just a person who has seen others make mistakes and turn their mistakes into something good. Hes should be given the same penalties as anyone else, but if this happened to someone in your families, youd want to get them help that they need. You would support them in their healing !! So many are ready to judge so fast!! If this were a person in your family.what would you do, would you help them find the help they need or would you just push them to the gutter..I have seen nothing to state that he was dealing drugs. Prayers to his family especially his children and wife.YES, .MR FULLER you can do this The truth will be heard in the court of law! Im sure he will get the help he needs.

So all you good church folks sitting there reading this with pain pills in your system, just know you are sinning. HOW ABOUT THIS:

We use our limited resources for erradicating violent criminals and thieves from our community before we put in any additional money enforcing these stupid drug laws... makes it sound like he was shooting up heroin or something... Big government laws telling you what you can and can't do with your own body... lots of grandmas around here you need to lock up too if you want to go down this road.

Read the article...he was pulled for speeding (which is the primary factor in auto related deaths) and his suspicious behavior led to the discovery...so we have a man loaded on pills speeding, I don't care how much money he gives away, it does not excuse risking others lives. I am all for an end to big government intrusion but in this case he wasn't "in the privacy of his own home"....

|
May 15, 2013
I Re-Read the article and it doesn't indicate he was charged with impaired driving. Not sure how you concluded he was "loaded on pills" while speeding.

Now, if he was endangering others by his speeding, charge him for SPEEDING and give him the MAX punishment.. charge him with reckless driving and public endangerment if need be. Using these stupid drug laws to ruin peoples lives is well out of hand. If this were some nobody who hadn't done anything with his life it wouldn't have even made the paper. The punishment this man and his business has already suffered for this prohibition mindset well outweighs the supposed "crime".

And the LEOs did go "in the privacy of his own home" and even his place of business all because the dude had some pain pills.

There are alot of great LEOs in this county but to some "Protect & Serve" means protect their job and serve themselves. You Read the article and GIVE ME A BREAK. GET THE KILLERS, RAPISTS AND THIEVES off the streets. The government and docs just want a monopoly on medicine and the state and county just want REVENUE AND CONTROL.

As you take your prescribed medication, every day you take it , it gets more and more in your system so your body can get ammune to it if you take it long enough, then you get a stronger pill.
