Pembroke fire chief resigns job
by Teddy Kulmala
Staff writer

PEMBROKE — McDuffie Cummings Jr. has resigned as the fire chief of Pembroke after eight years holding the position.

Cummings did so a couple of months after the Town Council eliminated his pay, but he said his decision was not related to the loss of income.

According to interim Town Manager Marie Moore, Cummings submitted his resignation last week. Although The Robesonian has been told by more than one unnamed source that Assistant Fire Chief Earl Demery had also resigned, Moore said that has not happened. Attempts to reach Demery were unsuccessful.

“I’ve been with the Fire Department now for 27 years … ,” Cummings, who is chief of police at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, told The Robesonian. “It was just taking a lot of time. … The police job is a little bit more demanding, so I had to more or less let one of them go.”

Cummings said he will remain a member of the Fire Department and respond to calls.

His resignation comes two months after the Town Council voted to stop paying the chief and assistant chief. According to Moore, the chief had been paid $9,800 a year and the assistant chief $4,200 a year since 2007.

Cummings said his resignation had nothing to do with the loss of pay.

“None whatsoever,” he said. “I enjoyed the Fire Department, but it was just a little bit too demanding with the two jobs. … What I was being paid was more or less to pay for my fuel, conducting meetings, making sure guys went to class, and just keeping the department in operation.”

Cummings said that the fire chief is elected from within the Fire Department.

According to McDuffie Cummings Sr., former town manager, the Fire Department formerly had a full-time position for fire chief but eliminated it and decided to provide part-time pay to the chief and assistant chief to keep up with records, equipment and general operations of the department.

Cummings Sr. is the father of Cummings Jr.

I said it before and I will say it again, it is a VOLUNTEER fire dept. No salary for anyone! From the top to the bottom! NO SALARY! the most you should get is $5 a call for travel. Lets see, the math. $9800/$5 = 1960 fire calls for the chief and $4200/$5= 840 fire calls for the asst. Chief. Thats a joke for both of them. The bottom line is the old city council and mcduffie sr Gave them that money! No salery for volunteer fireman. Its not rocket science. Mcduffie jr and demery could have turn those salarys down in 2007 and said hey its volunteer, we dont get paid! Im shocked the firemen on the city dept. Didnt make a complaint about themselves not getting a salary too.

I read these comments both good and bad and wonder what these responses and actions are doing to the Pembroke Fire Department members. As a citizen of Pembroke, rumors are circulating that the department is disbanding and members are resigning because they respected their Chief and what the department stood for. They felt he was doing a job that deserved compensation. I spoke with a couple members and they stated they received $10.00 per call and didn't care if the chief was receiving a salary because of his attitude an dedication to the department and to protecting and saving peoples property. With the change in Town Council and Fire Deptartment administration, I hope and pray that when the fire department is called, someone is there to answer.

$9800 to your son to hold the title of Fire Chief? It won't be long until we find out how much work Jr. did for that "little bit" of money. Truth is Jr. now had to to held accountable since his daddy retarred (sic). Those Cummings' really got their fair share of our Town's $$$$$$$

Well "Jr" did a good job and had to answer to the town Board and not his father. No amount of money is enough to have to put up with the pack of "DA's" that they have in there now. The chief does not get their hands on any money. FYI - The town of Pembroke covers the Fire Dept they don't have to beg for money. Just like everything in Pembroke, the town board controls it, Except Pembroke Rescue Squad!!

Pembroke council will not be able to find another Chief or Assistant Chief as good or compliant as Cummings or Dimery.

Pembroke Truth should have researched and got his facts before he based his opinion on what he doesn't know. The Town Council voted to pay the Chief and the Asst. Chief for their service in maintaining equipment, training rosters, recruiting and ensuring that each and every member of the department maintained the requirements to be recognized as a firefighter by the State of North Carolina. This was a salary offered by the Town of Pembroke and the Town Council. Never once was this requested by the Chief and Asst.Chief. As a previous Chief, accountability is measured in the respect of your team and the effort and time put forth in maintaining the training and equipment needed to protect the jurisdiction in which you serve. In what I know of Jr. he maintained a class 5 rating with the Pembroke Fire Department with training and equipment and that alone would prove to me of his dedication to the citizens and business owners in Pembroke by reducing insurance premiums by providing a well trainined equipped department. In listening to conversations concerning the Town of Pembroke and issues that the town is facing. I would hope that personal grudges don't cloud judgements in matters of what is right and best for the Town of Pembroke.

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.

Do you think the tax structure in North Carolina should be reformed to reduce income taxes in exchange for higher sales tax and more taxes on services?
