LUMBERTON — Two people, including a teenage girl, were killed and four other people injured in a two-car accident on N.C. 72 on Wednesday. Two of those who were injured are in critical condition.
Santana Barton, 18, of Moores Lane, and 43-year-old Tracie Hunt, of Lizzie Belle Drive, died in the accident. They were among five people in a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier being driven by 18-year-old Christna Chavis, Hunt’s daughter, according to Lumberton police Officer Jason Walters.
The wreck happened on N.C. 72, directly behind the Robeson County Department of Social Services building.
According to Walters, the Chevrolet was traveling west just before 5:30 p.m. when it exited the right side of the road. Chavis over-corrected, the car re-entered the road, crossed the center line and was struck on the passenger side by a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck being driven by James Oxendine, 61, of McDaniel Road in Lumberton, Walters said.
The truck was traveling an estimated 45 mph when it struck the car, which Walters said was traveling in excess of 60 mph.
Cayla Chavis, who turned 16 years old on Wednesday and Stephanie Hunt, also 16, were thrown from the passenger car, Walters said, and are in critical condition. Neither was wearing a seat belt.
A dog that was in the car was also killed.
Christna Chavis was treated and released at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. A hospital spokesperson said this morning that Oxendine, Hunt and Cayla Chavis were all treated and transferred.
Officers this morning were at the scene investigating the accident.
“There will be some charges,” Walters said. “We’re still not sure the extent of them. We’ve been discussing that all morning.”
