RED SPRINGS — A Red Springs man was arrested and charged with a 3-year-old murder on Thursday — the same day he was released on parole from the Robeson County jail, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.
Reginald Alexander Stubbs, 21, of 17 C Westgate Terrace, was “picked up” on Thursday and charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 29-year-old Charles Ronchelle Lewis, according to sheriff’s Maj. Howard Branch.
Stubbs is being held without bond.
Lewis, of 704 Willow St. in St. Pauls, was shot and killed on Dec. 26, 2009, while at a nightclub at 287 Sandsbury Lane in Parkton, according to Branch.
“A lot of legwork over the last three years has been put into this case,” Branch said. “We don’t let old cases lay there — we still work on them. Sometimes it’s not as fast as people would like them to be, but we still work on them.”
Branch said that lawmen arrived at the club as a white GMC Envoy, carrying Lewis in the back, was coming out of the dirt road. He said that the driver of the Envoy was going to take Lewis to the hospital, but he was already dead.
Branch said when investigators arrived, the club was empty and “a lot of hours” by sheriff’s Lt. Reggie Strickland had been spent tracking down people who were at the club at the time of the shooting.
Stubbs was being released on parole after being convicted of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, according to the state Department of Corrections. Stubbs shot 24-year-old Kevin Quick, also of Red Springs, outside of a Westgate apartment on Sept. 19, 2008.
Stubbs and his brother, Rodrick Allen Stubbs, were also each charged with armed robbery and second-degree kidnapping in the 2010 robbery of Lumbee Guaranty Bank in Red Springs.
Lewis had previously faced charges of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, hit and run, felony breaking and entering, speeding to elude arrest and assault on an officer.
