LUMBERTON — A Pembroke man and his girlfriend have been charged in connection with a three-car accident Saturday that killed a Lumberton woman and injured two others, according to the Highway Patrol.

The man, Kenneth Shawn Chavis, 26, of 1642 Henry Berry Road, apparently reported the car stolen about 15 minutes after the accident that killed Misty Dawn Sanders, 34, of 3815 Dallas Road, according to Sgt. Scottie Chavis. The car, a 1994 Chevrolet, was registered to Chavis’ mother, Wendy Anderson Chavis, of the same Henry Berry Road address.

Kenneth Chavis, who was arrested on Tuesday, is charged with hit-and-run, careless and reckless driving, driving while license revoked and a seat belt violation, according to Trooper R.D. Terry, who investigated the accident. Khelia Raynea Blue, 22, of 5014 S. Chicken Road in Lumberton, has been charged with being an accessory to the hit and run. Chavis is being held at the Robeson County jail under a $15,000 bond; Blue’s bond was set at $5,000.

Chavis was traveling west U.S. 74 on Saturday when he attempted to pass a westbound 2004 Oldsmobile, according to the accident report. Chavis attempted to merge the Chevrolet back into the westbound lane and side-swiped the Oldsmobile before crashing head-on into Sanders’ vehicle, according to the report.

Sanders later died at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. The driver of the Oldsmobile was also treated at the hospital. A passenger in Sanders’ vehicle was treated by paramedics from Robeson County.

Chavis told Terry that he panicked and ran from the accident, Terry said. He called Blue, who picked him up from a nearby home.

I told ya they would get cha!!! He panicked alright. screwed up and ran. Now Mr. Chavis you will spend a few years in a small cell. Still a small price to pay for Misty Sanders. More charges will be handed down i'm sure, like felony death by motor vehicle and even reporting a false police report. I would have charged his mother with allowing a unlicense driver to drive the car. Not sure why he hasn't been charged now with it. Great job Trooper Terry, Sgt. Ardeen Hunt and who else was involved in this case.

Attention Johnson Britt!!!! You must allow your ADA to pull out all the case laws on this case. Please don't insult the Sanders family by offering this low life a plea bargin.

To the family, I'm sorry for your lost. I would take out civil charges against Chavis, his mom, and Blue. If they ever get a tax return, lottery winnings, inheritance it will go to the Sanders family. Make these people suffer like you have. It still want come close to your pain.

It's about time they started doing something with these people that help these sorry thugs. They are just as guilty as the ones that do the crime. Need to tighten up on these low lifes.

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.

Do you think the tax structure in North Carolina should be reformed to reduce income taxes in exchange for higher sales tax and more taxes on services?
