It’s time for fresh faces on Board of Commissioners To the Editor,
I attended the county commissioners meeting held Sept. 4 and I was not fooled by Mr. Tom Taylor’s attempt to move toward fiscal reform.
The recommendation to conduct a study is simply a clever ruse designed to lure citizens into complacency on the issue. My observations of the county commissioners’ demeanor and behavior during the meeting revealed they are disillusioned and out of touch with the citizens. Anyone in attendan...
Council’s gaming fees put a lot of people out of work To the Editor,
I can’t understand the Lumberton City Council and its views and outrageous fees on video poker while they have no problem with the state lottery. They imposed a $2,500 fee on each machine and that put a lot of places out of business and probably left approximately 100 people out of work. And people wonder why we are the poorest county in North Carolina.
People are going to gamble and we or I don’t need some idiots telling m...
President Obama will look out for nation’s middle class To the Editor,
The presidential race has become very clear to us. If you are rich, by all means vote for Mitt Romney, as he has your back covered. But if you are like most of us, vote for President Obama, as he truly cares about the middle class and has the vision to continue getting this great country back on track.

Fair brings new shows when it returns on Friday To the Editor,
The Robeson County Fair is almost here, opening this Friday when youngsters will have a half day of school. The Fair Board always advertises the fair as having something for everyone. Well, this year, they are starting the fair experience with the cover of the fair program being a “scratch & sniff” — scratch the program cover and it smells like cotton candy — so dear to my heart. That feature should bring out the kid in all o...
Taylor part of fight to fix 10-year pay problem To the Editor,
What a sweet moment it was when I opened The Robesonian to the editorial page and there they were … more letters addressing the same issue that I feel so concerned about, county commissioners’ compensation.
Although I was somewhat dismayed a couple weeks ago that my research and intent were questioned by the good reverend, the fact remains that the issue here is fixing something that is broken, not how long it has been brok...
Dr. Gerber’s retirement a loss for local residents To the Editor.
I was a resident of Lumberton for 26 years and was there when Dr. Dixon Gerber moved to town with his family and opened his practice of orthopedics.
Our first necessity for Dr. Gerber’s services came when my mother-in-law from Chadbourn fell and broke her hip. He operated on her and was so professional as well as caring with this aging lady — a caring that went far above the call of duty. Our next necessity for Dr. Gerber’s...
Give Republicans a chance at leadership To the Editor,
Robeson County has been run by Democrats for decades and look where it has gotten us. We are the poorest county in the state. We have the highest murder rate in the state. We have a high unemployment rate. Yet people continue voting the same way. Only one of our county commissioners, David Edge, is a Republican.
Our commissioners are the fourth-highest paid in the state and they each have $40,000 per year to spend as they p...
Voters elected the wrong Cummings for commissioner To the Editor,
Recently, The Robesonian looked into the salaries, benefits, retirement and discretionary funds of our commissioners vs. other fellow counties and their commissioners. The facts were astounding. Robeson County is the most impoverished in the state of North Carolina with growing unemployment, while our county commissioners are the highest paid with excellent benefits for their families as well.
This is not the first time thi...
Tribal Council not focusing on constitutional mandates To the Editor,
By tribal law, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina Tribal Council must recite the preamble to the Lumbee constitution at each meeting. The preamble speaks of a tribal government that promotes education, culture and social and economic well being. The council has been meeting recently to establish the tribal operating budget for 2012-2013.
These meetings have been well attended by Tribal Council members. The fact, however, th...
Show your support for local gallery for artists To the Editor,
For years people of Lumberton have begged for a local gallery that would show and sell art by area artists. The wait is over. Lazy River Gallery at 3435 Lackey St. is open and waiting for you to come by and visit and shop.
Shawn and Susan Gibson, Shelia Richardson and Linda Oxendine have dedicated themselves to the success of this venture. There have been two opening exhibitions at the gallery within the last month. Attenda...
Young triathlete has dreams crushed by bicycle theft To the Editor,
I would like to thank everyone connected to the TriWarriors Youth Triathlon that took place at the UNC Pembroke campus recently. My great-granddaughter entered the 6- to 8-year-old group. This was her first triathlon and she came in fourth place. She trained hard and was so proud.
After looking for a while we found a nice 21-speed bicycle for her and she fell in love with it. She was so proud of her bike and enjoyed trainin...
Taylor participated in the rise of benefits and pay To the Editor,
Let’s make sure we have the facts correct about who “opened our eyes” concerning excessive benefits, salary, travel allowances, and discretionary spending funds allocated by our county commissioners to themselves. In his letter to the editor, Mr. Dan Gola, praises Commissioner Tom Taylor for being the first to question these exorbitant expenditures financed by Robeson County taxpayers.
The facts and record indicate otherwis...
Commissioners make more than some county employees To the Editor,
Our county commissioners are being paid more to work parttime than some of our full-time county employees. Yes, you are parttime because all of you have outside employment or own a business, and you meet just twice a month. Gentlemen, be true to yourself, are you giving your constituents 100 percent?
I often ask people to name five things your commissioner has accomplished since being elected. They all say, “Well let me thi...
Commissioners should follow Taylor on discretionary spending To the Editor,
After reading in The Robesonian about the pay package for county commissioners, I’m reminded that this election is not about Democrat or Republican, it’s about common sense. All of us in District 7 should be proud of our commissioner, Tom Taylor, for shedding some light on the exorbitant cost to the taxpayers, which many of us knew nothing about until Mr. Taylor opened our eyes.
The health insurance provided to the commissi...
Death of Dr. Richardson a loss for the community To the Editor,
Sadly, I read the account of the death of Dr. David Richardson, my doctor for over 25 years. There aren’t enough words to express how deeply his death saddens me. He was not only a good physician but a true friend.
His bedside manner always lifted me up and assured me. He gave me much needed optimism and advice with each visit. He was a brilliant doctor, and much loved by not only me, but many, many others. He truly cared a...
Make tribal candidates earn your support To the Editor,
Think.
Here it is, that time of the year again, when we see signs on the sides of the roads with someone’s name on it asking us to vote for them to get on the Tribal Council or vote for them to become tribal chairperson. I ask the tribal members to think before they vote. Vote for the ones that they think will work for the tribal members and not for themselves. Don’t vote for someone just because your cousin or uncle asks y...
