Defeated Fairmont candidate
says mayor all wrong on election

To the Editor, I want to respond to Fairmont Mayor Charles Kemp’s opinion piece published Dec. 1 and titled “No chaos at town election.” Let’s get the record straight. My protest Nov. 14 before the Robeson County Board of Election was taken under oath and recorded. If Mayor Kemp had been there, he would have known that. Fact No. 1: Mayor Kemp should obtain the minutes of the Robeson County Board of Election meetings. I suggest Aug. 16 t...

Victim of violent crime still
supports Racial Justice Act

To the Editor, My son was a victim of the Ft. Hood massacre in November 2009. The attack took 13 lives and left 33 wounded. My son was struck by five bullets, the final one ripping through his body as he threw himself onto another victim to shield that person from further attack. I consider myself fortunate that my son survived. However, his physical and emotional wounds have changed his life — and our lives — forever. The helplessness, f...

Umberger, author of ‘SATW!’,
introduced Lumbee to world

To the Editor, Our script from the drama says “least we forget and in turn are forgotten, so now let a distant thunder break across our stage.” I write this as a tribute to our mentor, friend and playwright who passed in November, Dr. Randolph Umberger. Dr. Umberger was introduced to the Lumbee people and the new formed (1968) Robeson Historical Drama Association by world renouned playwright, the late Paul Green. Like many, he did not kno...

Tribal government continues to
dish out preferential treatment

To the Editor, CNN recently put things in black and white, spotlighting North Carolina’s unfortunate Republican success in gerrymandering. In this “re-segregation” redistricting, 49 percent of the state’s blacks were lumped into three of North Carolina’s 13 congressional districts. The “haves” keep while the “have-nots” are kept away. The have-nots of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina have issues in black and white that should have us al...

Robeson County NAACP unhappy
with current redistricting process

To the Editor, The Robeson County NAACP in conjunction with the Community Redistricting Coalition is very concerned about the present process being adhered to by the county commissionaires concerning redistricting. There have been different maps presented and altered since the presentation of the first map on Nov. 18, only one public hearing has occurred, that public hearing was on a different map and numbers, one that the public had not ...

Candidate needs to quit crying
about loss in Lumbee election

To the Editor, I would like to say to Eric Locklear, who sent you a letter that was published on Nov. 22, 2011: If you would stop your crying long enough to take a long hard look at the letter you wrote to the paper, bashing everybody and everything in sight, you would know why you didn’t win an election and why you will never win an election. You are not mature enough to be in any group of adult people. Sore loser is not enough of a word...

Mother frustrated that judge
lets man slide on child support

To the Editor, I am writing to express my complaint against Judge Moore and his lack of care or heart while hearing cases in child support court in Robeson County. The last four years I have been dealing with going in and out of court seeking child support for my daughter. When a man does not want to step up and be a real man and pay what a child needs for support, we are at the mercy of a judge’s decision. For four years every time I hav...

Rennert effort helped provide
Thanksgiving meal for families

To the Editor, A little more than three years ago, a group of concern people, The Greater Commission Missionary Outreach, realized so many neighbors (mostly with children) were not so fortunate to afford to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner with their family. It was put upon our hearts to provide them a Thanksgiving dinner. The dinner is the Saturday before Thanksgiving. How often does God prompt us to take action to meet the needs of others and ...

Kemp: No chaos at town election
have waited patiently and quietly until the Robeson County Board of Elections heard the protest from candidate Terry Evans regarding the recent town election in Fairmont. The board voted on Monday by a 2-1 majority vote to recommend that the state Board of Elections review the protest. I wholeheartedly disagree with this decision and want to offer my reasons why. Mr. Evans’ protest stems from the fact that he thinks having a movie company i...

It’s time for Cherokee, Lumbee
to negotiate a winning strategy

To the Editor, Your Nov. 20 “Win-win” editorial regarding the Cherokee Nation’s desire to expand its gaming operation and the Lumbee Nation’s desire to obtain federal recognition hit the nail on the head. One would think that both sides would do just as you tended to suggest, sit down together and with members of the leadership of the North Carolina General Assembly and devise a plan that would be beneficial to both tribes and the state of ...

Victim of motorcycle theft
upset by lack of investigation

To the Editor, The Robeson County Sheriff’s Department was called out to a theft of a motorcycle on Nov. 14. The bike had been stolen between midnight and 6 a.m. The officer took a statement while sitting in his car. He never got out of his car to look at any tracks. The tracks led to a neighbor’s house, then to the main road. The officer was offered pictures of the bike and a recording of the tracks leading to the neighbor’s house. He did ...

Parent disappointed by omission
of W.H. Knuckles new in’Chronicle

To the Editor, I was disheartened that the recent issue (38), dated Nov. 8, 2011, of “The Chronicle” of the Public Schools of Robeson County failed to include W.H. Knuckles. I am a concerned parent, and I feel I must voice my opinion on this issue. I am convinced that the children of W.H. Knuckles are just as important as the other children who attend the Public Schools of Robeson County. The children of W.H. Knuckles are not totally read...

Unsuccessful Lumbee candidate
says election rife with problems

To the Editor, “Keeping ‘Em Honest” ain’t stopping cause folks paid a lot of money to keep me out of office. As a matter of fact, this engine may just be getting started. In “Keeping ‘Em Honest,” the Lumbee people should know a few things. Two directors within LTNC Tribal Administration during their workday intimidated a local restaurant owner into removing my campaign signs on at least two occasions. Amidst multiple complaints of inappro...

Where were elected officials
during Veterans Day event?

To the Editor,. No doubt there were many gatherings throughout our great land on Nov. 11 to pause for a few moments and say “Thanks” “Well done” to those who served in one of our branches of armed services. At 11 a.m. in the courtyard behind our county library in downtown Lumberton, the very small group that gathered appeared to be made up entirely of veterans and family members — veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and perhaps late...

Taxpayers pay for so many
people ‘working the system’

To the Editor, As most people in North Carolina know, as well as the citizens of Robeson County, this county is not only the poorest county in North Carolina, but is also known as the most negative. This is due to having many people who don’t seem to care about how they contribute to this negative impression. They also pass their ignorance/non-caring from one generation to another. A perfect example of the non-caring attitude is how some ...
