Judge Daniels says article misrepresented her comments To the Editor,
I thank The Robesonian for its article covering the county’s King Day celebrations. I was pleased that actual quotations attributed to me were almost completely accurate.
However, I deny other statements attributed to me. I did not refer to blacks or any race when I said that my exposure to life in Robeson County as a whole was limited while growing up in Parkton. I did not say that I witnessed “racial inequality” when runn...
NFL’s Panthers should pay for work, not the taxpayers To the Editor,
Our NFL team, the Carolina Panthers, is asking the citizens of Charlotte for $144 million and the state of North Carolina for $62.5 million to renovate the Panther football stadium located here in Charlotte. In order for this to happen, our state legislature is being asked to approve a 1 percent prepared food and beverage tax for the bedraggled taxpayers of Charlotte and a $62.5 million grant from our state treasury.

Commissioners’ spokesmen fail in putting up a defense To the Editor,
We want to thank all who participated in the commissioners’ meeting, both for and against, the commissioners’ compensation package and the discretionary funds process, which was an awesome show of democracy in action. We apologize to those who could not obtain seating or hear the presentations.
The commissioners’ defense strategy fell short.
They failed to inform their spokesmen that the issue was process, not use of the ...
Fire station gets makeover thanks to generous donors To the Editor,
The Furman K. Biggs Fire Station on Bailey Road has received a facelift thanks to a few generous donors. To the delight of the firefighters who call the station their second home, the makeover began during the summer months and were recently completed. In 1983, the fire station was constructed in honor of Furman K. Biggs and has since been one of the homes of the Lumberton firefighters.
Kenny and Bonnie Biggs along with Mrs...
Humane Society thanks sponsors, volunteers for annual Fur Ball To the Editor,
The Robeson County Humane Society recently held its 10th annual Fur Ball at the Pinecrest Country Club, which raised money to support the society’s shelter, where adoptable cats and dogs are cared for until loving permanent homes can be found.
The proceeds are also being used to support a spay-neuter program for low-income county residents, so fewer animals will be homeless or have to be put down at the pound. Since this pr...
Media shirking their duty to ensure accurate reporting To the Editor,
The Robesonian ran an Associated Press article on Jan. 20, 2013 by Marilynn Marchione (Associated Press). She stated in the opening sentence this untruth: “Nearly as many Americans die from guns as car crashes each year.” This is false. Yet the article was not in the opinion section, but in the regular news section. The actual numbers are very telling and different. The number of deaths from vehicle crashes in 2010 were 32,88...
Election might be time to address pay and benefits To the Editor,
With all due respect to the county commissioners, the public is very concerned about spending, from the federal level to the county level. Spending is out of control and this country is broke.
Why do the Robeson County commissioners have higher pay and benefits than most, if not all, of the other counties in the state? We are the poorest county in North Carolina and have some of the highest taxes.
It is obscene to hand ou...
Commissionerd need to show leadership on pay, stipend To the Editor,
The Robeson County commissioners are going to spend three days together this week during their annual retreat — approximately 16 hours if they stick by their published schedule and they’re not going to talk about their extraordinary pay and benefits package? Hard to believe!
For the past several months there have been multiple media reports about the commissioners’ pay and stipends — fourth highest in North Carolina — and t...
Group asks for participation in effort to get fiscal reform To the Editor,
In my last letter to the editor published in November 2012, I challenged Commissioner Raymond Cummings to show some leadership and initiate the fiscal reforms the citizens demand.
It is obvious that the report fell on deaf ears. My assumptions were correct that the commissioners cannot lead on this issue.
Citizens, Mr. Cummings’ strategy, with the other commissioners supporting, is to ignore the issue and hope it goes awa...
Robeson County rich with resources, lacks leadership To the Editor,
In response to an article that appeared in your paper on Jan. 26 entitled “Magazine: Robeson tops NC in poverty,” I would like to share my thoughts. In my opinion the three largest industries in Robeson County are the education, poverty and criminal industries.
Follow the money from these three industries and see who is benefiting from them and we may have some answers as to why we are in the shape that we find ourselves. R...
Fifth Street resident worries about rising number of vagrants To the Editor,
West Fifth Street here in Lumberton was turning out to be a better place to live, fewer street walkers, beggars, thieves, and break-ins. But now, there are more homeless and street walkers than ever.
I have been living in Lumberton on West Fifth Street now for the past seven years, and I have never seen it like this. There is an abandoned home all boarded up, next to Black’s Tire, and there are numerous homeless who have ta...
Our leaders should take a scene from movie ‘Lincoln’ To the Editor,
“Can we choose to be born? Are we fitted to the times we’re born into?” So wonders our 16th president portrayed in Steven Spielberg’s film “Lincoln.”
Every president could probably relate to Lincoln’s existential examination. It’s often said that great presidents are made by circumstances of their presidency, not necessarily their God-given talent. Having recently had a chance to take in “Lincoln,” I was struck by the signi...
Crouch resorts to bigotry in attempt to defend Rice To the Editor,
Stanley Crouch’s column in The Robesonian on Jan. 1 reeks of racism and anti-white bigotry. His claim that Republicans found Susan Rice unqualified because she is a black female lacks truthfulness, profundity, and, worst of all, evidence. He even invokes and besmirches the names of Sarah Palin and Andrew Breitbart. The former because she dares to be a conservative who served in elective office and speaks her mind and the latt...
Robeson County schools out front in protecting children To the Editor,
A nation has mourned the murders of countless victims in our country. The National Rifle Association has said put a police officer in every school.
I really don’t think that the NRA has ever been to Robeson County. We might be one of the poorest counties in the nation, but we love our children and there have been resource officers in our school system for years. The Public Schools of Robeson County is way ahead of those sch...
This nation has lost God’s protection through our sins To the Editor,
Ever since the Supreme Court ordered prayer and God out of public schools, Satan with his power of death moved in schools and the killing of school children has become a regular horrible event. Twenty children in a school in Newtown, Conn., were expected home from school but they went to Heaven from school. God trumped Satan.
President Obama said he was upset over the recent killing of school children, at the same time Obam...
Tribal government turns back on its elders, youths To the Editor,
The Lumbee have perfected the holiday exchange of the white elephant — the tradition about passing the buck.
The first elephant was discovered eight months ago when our tribal government was found to be a fraud. The legislative branch has for more than a decade been unconstitutional. While the executive branch has supported corrective action to return our tribal government to constitutional compliance, for eight months the ...
