Local players show off in annual basketball tourney

PEMBROKE — The annual Lumbee Games 3-on-3 basketball tournament was played out over the weekend at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke with teen and adult entrants showing off their skills on the court.

James Benjamin, Jashawn Locklear and Layla Locklear claimed the gold medal in the 14-16 age group.

The 16-19 winners were Khalil Thompson, Davonte Banks and CJ Locklear.

The team of Isaiah Kennedy, Kevin Oxendine and Jacovier Jacobs claimed first place is the 20-and-up age group, rounding out the winners of the three divisions.

South Robeson announces date for sports physicals

ROWLAND — Student-athletes hoping to play sports at South Robeson High School this upcoming season will have the opportunity to get their state-required physicals on July 14.

The event begins at 9 a.m. at the school and the cost is $10.

Student-athletes in need of a form can meet football coach Clay Jernigan at the field house between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Volunteer coaches needed

LUMBERTON — Organizers are seeking volunteer coaches for a basketball tournament at Lumberton High School on July 18 and a similar event on July 25. The events will be open to 7th- to 11th-grade girls and 4th- to 11th-grade boys.

Soccer registration coming up

The Lumberton Recreation Department is hosting fall soccer registration for boys and girls from July 13 to Aug. 5.

Registration is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Bill Sapp Recreation Center for kids ages 5 to 12. The child must be five years of age and cannot be 13 on/by Aug. 31.

The cost is $10 and first time participants must show a birth certificate.

UNCP sports camps coming soon

PEMBROKE — The UNCP athletics department will be offering camps for six different sports throughout July, which will be conducted by the coaching staff of the various sports and open to athletes around the region.

The women’s basketball team will host a team camp for high school girls basketball teams on Saturday.

A four-day baseball camp will be hosted by the coaching staff at Northeast Park in Lumberton from July 13 to 16, while the softball coaching staff will conduct two-day camps from July 21 to 22 for incoming high school freshmen to seniors.

The baseball camp is for ages 9 to 13, running from 9 a.m. to noon each day. The cost is $65, which includes a t-shirt and instruction.

The men’s soccer program is hosting a team camp for high school boys squads and club teams from July 20 to 24.

The volleyball coaching staff hosts its Unity Skills Camp from July 20 to 21.

The football coaching staff, including head coach Shane Richardson, will be hosting a one-day camp on July 24 for high school junior and seniors, with a cost of $25 per person and registration starting at 8 a.m.
