William McGirt to hose golf clinic

FAIRMONT — Fairmont native William McGirt, a professional golfer on the PGA Tour, is hosting an inaugural golf clinic and exhibition Thursday at the Fairmont Golf Club.

Currently 83rd in the FedEx Cup points standings, McGirt will kickoff the one-day event at 4 p.m. fielding questions and mingling with participants.

A Srixon/Cleveland golf representative will be on hand to feature demos of their products. At 6 p.m. participants will head to the driving range for a one-hour clinic with McGirt. Following the clinic, attendees will have the opportunity to follow the Fairmont native as he plays a few holes on the course.

40 years and counting for first ace

Bruce Davis, a longtime member at Pinecrest Country Club and a golfer for 40 years, had to leave town to make his first-ever hole-in-one, doing so on July 4 at Meadowlands Golf Course at Calabash.

Mullis used an 8-iron on the 146-yard par 3 No. 11 to roll in the ace. He finished with a round of 74.

July Fourth Super Ball tourney

The team of Donnie Douglas, Jeff Wishart, Dyrck Fanning and Tommy Britt claimed top honors at the July Fourth Super Ball tournament at Pinecrest Country Club.

The team posted a score of 57 to win first place. Raegan Reeves, Pat Jessup and Jeff Mashburn took home second place with a score of 58. The third place team of Warner Hall, James P. Smith, Donnie Beck and Ronnie Hunt finished with a 59.

David Lowry Jr. shot a 65 for the lowest round of the week, playing with Tray Martin, Donnie Beck and Lonail Locklear.

Maynor, Canady win shootout

Tommy Maynor and Greg Canady took home first-place honors in the championship flight of the Senior Shootout at Fairmont Golf Club on Tuesday.

David Hunt and Freddie Maynor were the runner-ups in the championship flight. The winners of the first flight were J.D. and Garner Revels, with Richard Moore and Ray Locklear coming in second place.

Wilkie Lowry and Furman Dial won the second flight, with Mel Britt and Tom Jones claiming a runner-up finish.

The special event winners were: Jimmy Waddell, Mike Gandley, Ray Clark and Al Wall.

Junior golfers compete up the road

Robeson County had six junior golfers showcase their skills on the golf course last week.

Walter Ghaffar of Lumberton claimed a runner-up finish in the U.S. Kids Pinehurst tour event at Pinehurst on July 2.

Ghaffar birdied No. 18 at the Pinehurt No. 7 course to post a score of 74 and force a playoff against Spencer Oxendine of Fayetteville, but fell short after the second hole.

The previous day, Ghaffar shot a 75 at Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill to finish third in an event sponsored by the UNC Golf Team.

The county had five players compete in an event at Whispering Pines sponsored by the First Tee of Pinehurst on June 30.

Meredith Godwin of Rowland shot an 81 and 85 in the girls two-round event to finish second in the girls two-round event. Alaina Malcolm of Pembroke was a fourth-place finisher.

On the boys side, Silas Woods of Maxton claimed a second place finish, shooting a 79 and 83 from the green tees. Ethan Evans of Lumberton finished fourth in the division and Malachi Woods of Maxton finished third from the white tees shooting a 79 and 90. Tyee Seals of Pembroke finished in fourth place.
