Golfers compete in Industrial Tournament
FAIRMONT — Golfers from around Robeson County gathered at Fairmont Golf Course on Thursday to compete in the annual Industrial golf tournament, celebrating the appreciation of industry in the county.
The tournament was a four-man captain’s choice format.
The team of Chuck Smith, Kelly Lowry, Harvey Godwin and Elliot Davis claimed first place. Alan Fowlkes, Ronnie Hunt, Larry McNeill and Donnie Beck took home second place honors. The team of Carlton Dial, Tommy Maynor, J.D. Revels and Jason Lowry rounded out the winners with a third place finish.
PINEHURST — Walter Ghaffar of Lumberton claimed a tie for second place in the 13 to 14 age division of the U.S. Kids Pinehurst tour championship on Aug. 23.
The 13-year-old carded a 3-over-par 75 on Pinehurst’s No. 8 course for the runner-up finish.
Peter Jackson, 14, of Raleigh won the tour championship with a 74. Spencer Oxendine of Fayetteville tied Ghaffar for second place honors.
Both Ghaffar and Oxendine recorded eagles in the round. Oxendine drained a six-foot eagle putt on the par-5 4th hole, and Ghaffar holed out from the greenside bunker on the par-5 11th for his eagle.
Ghaffar also finished second to Jackson on the 32-player tour in total points. The Pinehurst summer tour included eight events.
FAIRMONT — Tom Jones, Lee Hunt, Wil Jones, Jasper Jackson, and Bruce Thompson were winners of the Old Hackers League on Aug. 24 at Fairmont Golf Course.
The league plays from the senior tees, but is open to all golfers. The weekly event is hosted at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at Fairmont.
FAIRMONT — Jimmy Stone and Mike Gandley were the big winners of the Senior Shootout on Aug. 25 at Fairmont Golf Course.
The duo claimed first place in the championship flight, fending off Lonail Locklear and Larry McNeill.
Jerry Jolly won the first flight, with John Lahey and Al Wall claiming second place.
The special event winners were: Marshall McDonald, Steve Lewis, Ronald Moore and Al Wall.
The next Senior Shootout will be Tuesday, with a shotgun start set for 9 a.m. For information, call the pro shop at 910-628-9931.
