LUMBERTON — For William Gentry, the Kiwanis All-American Golf Tournament is more than just your average competition.

“It’s actually an event, not just another golf tournament,” said Gentry, president of the Kiwanis Club of Robeson-Lumberton. “Golfers from all over Robeson County and beyond look forward to it. Many play in it every year. We’re expecting about 80 teams.”

Over the past 37 years, the Kiwanis Club of Robeson-Lumberton has done plenty to help children around the county. The annual golf tournament raises money that its gives back to the community.

The fundraiser will return this weekend when Pinecrest Country Club hosts the 38th-annual event, starting on Saturday.

Played as a two-man best ball event, the tournament is open to golf amateurs ages 21 and older. The $200 entry fee includes breakfast and lunch each day, as well as greens and cart fees, range balls and other gifts.

All proceeds go to agencies providing support, guidance and protection to children around the county.

Past funds have been used to provide clothes and shoes to students in need, pay for counseling of children who suffered the death of a family member, buy books for second-graders and supply Christmas gifts and scholarships to area youth. Money has also been donated to numerous organizations that help local youth.

Gentry expects an all-around great weekend on the course and in the clubhouse.

“The weather forecast is good and it looks like the temperatures will moderate from the hot weather that we have been having,” he said. “This being a two-day tournament makes it very exciting with the winners getting the coveted blue jacket.”

John Haskins — head coach of the women’s basketball team at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke — and Larry Cloninger slipped on the blue jacket last year, winning by two strokes to hold off Stephen Pippin and Chip Collins. Mark Lassiter and Keith McGirt claimed third place.
