GREENSBORO — Fairmont native William McGirt sat in a tie for first place early Thurday afternoon after a hot morning start in the Wyndham Championship.
McGirt was tied with Erik Compton atop the leaderboard after carding an 8-under-par 62 on the par-70 course at Sedgefield Country Club.
Posting a bogey-free first round, McGirt finished his first nine holes at 5 under. He rolled in birdies on Nos. 10 and 13, before back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16. He rounded out the front with a birdie on the 18th.
Carrying his momentum to the final nine holes, McGirt birdied Nos. 3, 5 and 8 to finish his round with a one stroke lead over Jim Herman and Derek Ernst. Tiger Woods carded a 6-under-par 64 to finish two strokes off the lead in 5th place.
Places are likely to change throughout the afternoon as more golfers finish their rounds.
McGirt is set to tee off in the second round at noon Friday.
