Mistakes cost Fairmont in loss to Westover

Staff report

FAYETTEVILLE — Despite some big plays from quarterback Julius Caulder, penalties and defensive breakdowns overwhelmed Fairmont in a 52-26 loss at Westover to open the 2015 season.

Caulder completed just 9 of 23 passes and was intercepted once, but numerous drops wrecked promising Golden Tornado drives. He finished with 229 yards passing, including two long hookups with Jarique Moore during a close first half.

Moore turned a screen pass into a 94-yard touchdown scamper to get Fairmont on the board. Later, he caught a long pass from Caulder in stride down the Westover sideline for a 72-yard score.

At that point, Fairmont trailed just 24-18, the difference being three failed two-point conversions by the Tornadoes while the Wolverines converted all three of theirs.

Moore finished with four receptions for 189 yards. As a team, Fairmont mustered 324 total yards of offense, including 95 on the ground. Westover amassed 336 rushing yards as part of their 417 total yards.

Fairmont was tagged with 12 penalties for 78 yards. Westover was flagged 17 times for 160 yards and had five touchdowns called back, including three on one drive.
