Lady Rams beat Red Springs
PEMBROKE — The Purnell Swett High School girls tennis team faced little resistance in a 9-0 win against Red Springs on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Rams (2-0) claimed victories in each singles match and doubles match to notch the win against the visiting Lady Red Devils (0-2).
Senior Nikana Oxendine led the way as the top-seeded singles player, defeating Viridiana Tapia 8-1. Brooke Huggins defeated Gabrielle Pecina 8-2 in the battle of the No. 2 seeds, while Emily Deese claimed a victory over Breanna Dial in the No. 3 singles match. Kari Brooks, Hailey Evington and Myla Clark also notched wins for the Lady Rams.
In doubles play, the duo of Oxendine and Huggins defeated Tapia and Pecina 8-3, Deese/Brooks beat Dial/Stephanie Alejandro 8-0 and Evington/Clark won by forfeit.
“We have a young team in terms of playing experience,” said Purnell Swett coach David Leek.
“Anytime you can get on the court and face somebody different and win. It’s special. Our girls have worked so hard during the summer and we are showing signs of improvement, but we still have a long way to go.”
The Lady Rams return to action at 4 p.m. Thursday at West Bladen. Red Springs will travel to South Columbus for a 4 p.m. match Thursday.
Lady Pirates win third straight
FAYETTEVILLE — The Lumberton girls tennis team continued its hot start to the season with a 9-0 win at Pine Forest on Tuesday.
The Lady Pirates (3-0) have only lost one match so far this season in 24 total matches.
St. Pauls defeats West Bladen
DUBLIN — Ricardo Flores netted a pair of goals for the St. Pauls boys soccer team against West Bladen on Tuesday, including the tie-breaker in a 5-3 win for the Bulldogs.
Flores scored both goals in the second half, breaking the 3-3 tie with 13 minutes remaining and adding an insurance goal in the final minute to give St. Pauls (1-1-1) its first win of the season.
West Bladen’s Seth Britt scored a pair of goals in the second half to give the Knights (2-1-1) a 3-2 lead, but St. Pauls scored the final three goals to earn the victory.
The Bulldogs scored a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the first half for a 2-1 edge at intermission. The Bulldogs’ goals were by Christopher Irra and Juan Molina.
After Britt’s second goal gave West Bladen a 3-2 lead, St. Pauls tied the game in the 59th minute on a goal by Alex Avalos.
The Bulldogs will be back on the field Thursday for a 6 p.m. game at Westover.
Lady Mustangs defeat Swett
ROWLAND — The South Robeson volleyball team claimed a 3-1 victory over Purnell Swett on Tuesday for its first win of the season.
It was a hard-fought win for the Lady Mustangs (1-1), who won their three sets by two points each (26-24, 25-23, 26-24) to claim the victory.
South Robeson was led by Halei Chavis, who turned in a dominating match, tallying 17 kills. Micaela Hunt added seven kills, 11 service points, six service aces and six assists for the Lady Mustangs. Nakala Brooks finished with 10 service points, nine assists and five aces. Destiny Strickland also had five aces and nine assists.
The Lady Rams were led by Paige Sweeney, who finished with 15 service points, five aces and six kills in the loss. Alicia Freeman chipped in with 14 service points, 10 assists and six aces.
Purnell Swett will travel to Riverside Christian Academy on Thursday for a 4 p.m. non-conference match. South Robeson will be back in action on Sept. 3 for a 4:30 p.m. match at Fairmont.
Lady Pirates fall short vs. South Columbus
LUMBERTON —The Lumberton volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit to tie the match with South Columbus, but the Lady Pirates fell just short of claiming their first victory of the season.
The Stallions (2-0) won the fourth set 15-7 to thwart the comeback attempt, giving Lumberton (0-3) its third straight loss to start the season.
London Thompson led Lumberton with nine kills. Kortnee Floyd added 22 assists for the Pirates and Morgan Brigman finished with 15 digs.
South Columbus won the first two sets 25-11 and 25-13, before Lumberton (0-3) rallied with a 26-24 win and a 25-22 win to tie the match.
