ROWLAND — The Purnell Swett football team got off to a fast start against county rival South Robeson on Friday night, scoring a first-quarter touchdown to take an 8-0 lead before the game was postponed due to lightning late in the second quarter.
The Rams and Mustangs will resume play at 6 p.m. Saturday, with 7:17 left to play in the first half.
Those who had tickets will be readmitted if they show their stubs. Others can purchase tickets at the gate.
Quarterback Desmond Davis is 2-for-2 with 50 yards and a touchdown in his first start for the Rams.
Davis connected with wideout Luke Brooks on a 42-yard pass late in the first quarter to give the Rams an early lead. Davis scampered into the endzone for the two-point conversion, making it 8-0.
Swett’s defense looked strong early in the game, capitalizing on its pass rush with several tackles in the backfield. South Robeson’s longest play came on a 25-yard run by quarterback Darrius Brown, who squirted loose on a busted play.
When play resumes Saturday, the Rams will start in the redzone with a chance to increase their lead. A bad snap near the goal line pushed the ball back to the 19-yard line before the game was delayed due to lightning.
