FAIRMONT — As a player on the court and in the field, Courtney McCormick sees herself as the person who works to get the team fired up so the group can succeed as a whole.

The senior at Fairmont High School also uses that same mentality off the playing surface by helping any way she can to make others’ lives better.

“I like to see people with a smile on their face and knowing that you changed somebody to make them happy,” McCormick said.

McCormick has played three years of varsity volleyball at libero and has played three seasons for the varsity softball team. So far this season, she has tallied 88 digs for the Golden Tornadoes.

“She brings her whole heart into everything she does,” said Fairmont volleyball coach Michael Baker. “When you see Courtney, you see a team player.”

As well as being a member of those teams, she also is involved with organizations at school and the community.

She is the president of the Art Club along with being a member of the National Honors Society and the National Technical Honors Society. Outside of school, she volunteers at Greenbrier nursing home as well as at her church.

“I try to use my time wisely,” McCormick said. “I’m always on the go.”

Even with giving her time to play sports, staying involved at school and volunteering, McCormick is able to keep things balanced in the classroom as well with a 3.89 grade point average. On top of her normal high school class load, McCormick also takes college prep classes.

Her involvement why McCormick was September’s Mountaire Farms/Civitas Media Scholar Athlete of the Month.

The program’s mission is to highlight male and female senior student-athletes within Robeson, Scotland and Bladen counties who carry a 3.0 GPA or higher. Nominees need to also be recognized by their coaches for outstanding sportsmanship and perform with superior ability in athletic competition.

Each monthly winner receives a $1,000 college scholarship and becomes eligible for an additional $1,500 in college funds that is awarded in June to the male and female scholar athletes of the year.

“I thank them (teachers and coaches) for everything,” she said. “Without them, I wouldn’t have this award or this opportunity.”

She sees her mother as the inspiration for hard work and determination to help others. As a worker with social services, McCormick says her mom is always helping people no matter what and that’s who she tries to model her life after.

“She’s always taught me to never give up on anything,” McCormick said. “She’s my inspiration.”

“Her mother is always helping us out, and that has rubbed off on Courtney because she is the helping type of person,” Baker said.

She looks forward to attending The University of North Carolina at Pembroke in the fall, with multiple reasons factoring into the choice. McCormick, who hopes to be an occupational therapist, plans on enrolling in the pre-occupational therapy program at UNCP. Along with an educational program fitting to her career path, she also likes how close the school is to home for her.
