LUMBERTON — James Phillips of Lumberton is this week’s winner of the Pigskin Predictions Contest, with only one missed game from last weekend’s slate of games.

Phillips, a Lumberton High School alum and avid North Carolina fan, incorrectly picked the Fairmont-Whiteville game, but had a clean sheet the rest of the way en route to the victory.

His prize: a $100 gift certificate. The certificate can be used at Pinecrest Country Club for merchandise or Carter’s Catering, which handles the food service at the club.

The so-called expert panel had a successful week as well. Ronnie Chavis and Vonta Leach led the way with 13-of-15 correct picks.

Loretta Jones of Fairmont was last week’s winner. At 94 years old, Jones showed the rest of the pickers that experience matters.

The ballot for next weekend’s games will appear in Sunday’s paper and must be postmarked by Oct. 16 or delivered to the newspaper office by 5 p.m. that day.
