It was a rough week for Robeson County’s high school football teams as a whole, with St. Pauls and Fairmont notching the only wins on Friday night.

The Bulldogs (2-5) and Golden Tornadoes (5-2) each claimed shutout victories, with Fairmont beating West Columbus 56-0 and St. Pauls winning 38-0 over East Columbus.

Running back Trey Thompson continued his hot streak on the ground in the second straight win for the Bulldogs, rushing for 126 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The senior scored twice last week in St. Pauls’ 12-6 win over South Robeson.

Sophomore quarterback Tommy Jackson had an efficient night under center, going 10-of-15 for 99 yards and a 26-yard touchdown to Michael Barnes.

Defensively, Manuel Rojas and Caleb Inman tallied five tackles each to lead the Bulldogs.

Like St. Pauls, Fairmont did most of its damage on the ground as well. The Golden Tornadoes had four players score a rushing touchdown in the win over the Vikings.

Keith McDaniel led the attack with 84 yards on six carries, followed by Malik Arnette, who finished the game with 63 yards on the ground. Julius Caulder and Halijah McLean added the other two rushing touchdowns for the Tornadoes.

But the biggest plays of the night came from DeAngelo McMillan and Jarique Moore. McMillan had a scoop-and-score touchdown on a fumble recovery and Moore took a 54-yard punt return to the house.

Red Springs

The Red Devils saw their hopes of an unbeaten season come to an end in a 26-21 loss at Whiteville on Friday.

Senior running back Ron Alexander led the offense with 109 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries for the Red Devils. But the touchdown and 61 of those yards came on the opening drive of the game.

Quarterback Toddrick Lockhart led a late rally for Red Springs, throwing a pair of touchdown passes in the final minutes for the final tally.

Lumberton

The Pirates lost 42-7 to unbeaten Pinecrest, with junior all-purpose player Tyreik McCallum scoring the only touchdown of the night for Lumberton.

McCallum hauled in a 35-yard pass from quarterback Braylan Grice late in the fourth quarter and snagged an interception in the contest.

Sophomore Devonta McKoy led the Lumberton defense with a team-best 13 tackles and a sack in the loss.

Purnell Swett

Purnell Swett showed little resistance in a 57-8 loss to Scotland, with sophomore quarterback Lucas Oxendine providing the only spark on offense.

Oxendine rushed for 45 yards on eight carries and scored the Rams’ lone touchdown on a 16-yard run.

South Robeson

The young Mustangs fell 44-0 to South Columbus, with Michael Fields and Emmanuel Thompson emerging as the top tacklers for South Robeson.

Fields tallied eight stops to lead the Mustangs’ defense and Thompson added six.
