Rams win Robeson County wrestling title

The Purnell Swett wrestling team took home top honors at the Robeson County wrestling championships on Wednesday, competing against Lumberton and St. Pauls.

Lumberton beat Purnell Swett 41-40, with St. Pauls handing Lumberton a 39-38 loss and Purnell Swett giving the Bulldogs a 40-36 loss. With all three teams earning a win, the three-way tie was broken by total points leaving Purnell Swett in first, Lumberton in second by one point and St. Pauls finishing third.

The Pirates’ Noah Taylor earned most outstanding wrestler honors.

Taylor, Chris Kelly, Gustavo Sosa, Khari McQueen and Derrick Gorton took home county championship team honors at the event for Lumberton. The Rams’ Will Deese, Jonathan Locklear, DaQuan Newkirk, Millard Locklear and Luke Blue were named county championship team. Rafael Saavedra, Phillip Locklear, James Quinn and Willie Whitted were named to the county championship team for St. Pauls.

St. Pauls won the junior varsity title.

Dillon routs South Robeson

The South Robeson basketball teams lost a pair of games to Dillon on Wednesday, with the boys losing 103-79 and the girls dropping a 81-54 contest.

Davonte Banks recorded a double-double for the Mustangs, scoring 40 points to go with 11 rebounds. Cameron Werrell also logged a double-double performance, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

A’Terria Quick scored a game-best 36 points to lead the Lady Mustangs. Chania Troy had 10 rebounds and Carrington Mitchell scoreed seven points.

Khamele Manning dropped 32 points to lead the Lady Wildcats.
