Brown nabs 2nd PBC Field Athlete Of The Week honor

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The recognition continued to roll in for senior Jaynell Brown on Tuesday afternoon as the Pembroke native took home Peach Belt Conference Field Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this season, the league office announced.

Brown, a Lumberton High School graduate, earned the recognition after registering another NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 13.67 meters at the High Point-hosted VertKlasse Meeting on Friday. The performance was good enough to earn her a runner-up finish in the event behind Gardner-Webb’s Sarah Mitchell.

The showing also marked the second time this season that Brown has achieved an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the shot put. She hit the mark for the first time with a throw of 13.57 meters on March 18 at the UNC Chapel Hill-hosted Carolina Relays.

Brown, who headlines the PBC’s shot put performance list by 0.67 meters (2-feet, 2-inches), is the league’s only student-athlete to hit a provisional mark in the shot put so far this season, and she currently ranks 19th among NCAA Division II individuals in that event.

Women’s golf finishes 3rd at UWG Wolf Invitational

CARROLLTON, Ga. — A final-round 300, the lowest since October, was crucial in the No. 28 UNC Pembroke golf team maintaining its third-place position after Tuesday’s final round at the UWG Wolf Invitational.

It’s the sixth top-three finish in nine tournaments this season for the Braves (+61), who improved their team score in each round on the par-72, 5,844-yard Sunset Hills Country Club course in western Georgia.

No. 34 West Alabama (+31) put four individuals in the top five and won the team title by just strokes over host No. 25 West Georgia (+40). UNCP was the highest finisher among Peach Belt Conference schools, topping Young Harris (+73), North Georgia (+110) and Columbus State (+140) in fourth through sixth. Southern Wesleyan (+179) and Christian Brothers (+426) rounded out the eight-team field.

Black & Gold senior Laura Bird (+11) held on to a share of fourth in the 41-player field with a final-round 75, her third top-five finish of the season. Ashlii Thompson (+13) turned her best round of the tournament Tuesday, a 74 that pushed her into eighth, while freshman Alexandria Bare (+17) wrapped up the best-finish of her young career, 11th, with a final-round 78. Rebecca Mirovich (+20) was the Braves’ biggest mover in the final round, jumping from 22nd into a tie for 13th with a 73, tied for the third-lowest round of the day. Savannah Thompson (+35) used a final-round 80 to move up two places into 27th.

West Georgia’s Franziska Bremm (-2) was the lone player under par in the 54-hole tournament, winning the individual title by seven strokes.

The Braves will have nine days off before competing at the PBC Championships April 15-17 at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida. UNCP was fifth in the eight-team at last season’s installment.
