Lady Pirates close busy week with win

The Lumberton volleyball team won its third match this week to start the season at 3-0 win a straight-set win over Red Springs at Magnolia Elementary on Thursday.

Lumberton posted scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-14 in the win over the Lady Red Devils.

London Thompson had a team-high four kills, Trinity McBryde had 3 kills and Alyssa Oxendine added two kills. Christina Dickerson dished out 14 assists.

“Three games this week was a lot for the girls, and the Jamboree this past Saturday, and I could tell they were tired but they pulled through,” Lumberton coach Tre’ Britt said.

In jayvee action, Lumberton won in two sets over Red Springs. The Lady Pirates travel to South View on Monday, while Red Springs goes to Westover on Tuesday.

Lumberton tennis downs South View

With all its wins coming in the singles portion of the match, the Lumberton girls tennis team defeated South View on the road by a 6-3 score on Thursday.

Morgan Miller, Elizabeth Stanley, Haley Ivey, McKnight Pope and Anna Russ each recorded wins in two games for Lumberton in their singles matches. No. 1 Kaitlyn McDonald needed a tiebreaker to defeat her opponent after winning the first game 6-1 and dropping the second 1-6.

Lumberton (2-1) travels to Whiteville on Monday.

Lady Rams fall on road in volleyball

South Columbus topped the Purnell Swett volleyball team in a three-set contest in Tabor City on Thursday.

The loss was the season opener for the Lady Rams as the Lady Stallions won with scores of 25-12, 25-15 and 25-14.

The Lady Rams (0-1) won the jayvee contest in three sets.
