Thompson takes Myrtle Beach title, Braves earn fourth

OCEAN ISLE BEACH — For the third time in her collegiate career, UNC Pembroke senior Ashlii Thompson saw her name atop the leaderboard at the conclusion of an event, this time the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate in Ocean Isle Beach. It’s the second time Thompson has earned medalist honors at this event after winning as a freshman.

The Browns Summit, North Carolina native shot a one-under 71 in Tuesday’s final round to squeak out a one-shot victory in the 93-player field. Thompson (+1) was tied with West Georgia’s Franziska Bremm (+2) heading to the 18th hole Tuesday, but birdied the final hole to overtake Bremm and take home the title.

Thompson records her 16th-career top-five finish and third already this season. Her 77.01 career scoring average is second best in UNCP women’s golf program history.

The Braves (+40) duplicated their Monday round, carding another 308 Tuesday to drop into a fourth-place finish in the 17-team field. West Georgia (+32) fired a 309, 10 shots higher than the opening round, but hung on for a six-stroke win. Lenoir-Rhyne (+38) grabbed runner-up honors, while Wingate (+39) took third, just one stroke better than the Black & Gold.

UNCP’s Savannah Thompson (+9) shot 77 in the final round to share ninth with four others, her third top ten of her career. Freshman Katy Flax (+14) shaved four strokes off her first-round score, carding 77 Tuesday to jump into a tie for 25th. Sophomore Alexandria Bare (+16) shot 83 to tie for 34th, while junior Amanda Levy (+23) tied for 57th after a final-round 83.

The Braves are back in action Oct. 17-18 in the fall’s final tournament, the LeAnn Noble Memorial, hosted by Peach Belt Conference foe North Georgia. The 36-hole tournament will be played at the Achasta Golf Club in Dahlonega, Georgia.
