Big first half leads Fairmont in rout

CERRO GORDO — Fairmont scored all of its points in its 51-7 win during the first half on the road at West Columbus on Thursday.

Quarterback Julius Caulder passed for four touchdowns and Halijah McLean added two more scores on the ground for the Golden Tornadoes (4-3). Caulder connected with Jarique Moore for three scores and the other one went to Jordan Waters.

South Columbus shutout South Robeson 46-0 in Tabor City to set up a matchup with two of the three undefeated teams in the Three Rivers Conference next Friday when Fairmont plays at South Columbus.

Patriots run away from Lumberton

SOUTHERN PINES — Pinecrest jumped out to a 27-point lead in the first half and didn’t look back en route to claiming a 48-14 win at home over Lumberton to open Southeastern Conference play for both teams.

Lumberton (2-5) closed each of the halves with touchdowns runs after the Patriots opened the first half up 27-0 and scored the first 21 points in the third quarter.

Taevion Stephenson scored with four seconds left in the first half to cut the Pinecrest lead to 27-6 at the intermission and Montrez Howell scored with 5:12 left in the game. Howell rushed for 101 yards on 26 carries.

Braylan Grice went 12-for-25 with 71 yards passing and rushed for 33 yards. Tyreik McCallum had three receptions for 26 yards.

Lumberton hosts Hoke next week.

McQueen powers Scotland past Purnell Swett

LAURINBURG —Syheam McQueen rushed for five touchdowns to lead Scotland to a dominating 56-0 win at home over Purnell Swett.

McQueen’s five scores came in the first half when the Scots took a 49-0 lead into halftime.

Al’Drique Thompson had 19 rushes for 46 yards and McKinley Strickland had five catches for 36 yards.

Next Friday, the Rams take on Richmond at home.

Hoke soccer tops Lumberton

RAEFORD — The Lumberton boys soccer team attempted to rally from a three-goal deficit but fell short in a 3-2 loss at Hoke on Thursday night.

Rene Altamirano scored both goals for the Pirates, who pushed hard in the final minutes in an attempt to tie the score. Hoke led 2-0 at the break.

Red Springs volleyball tops Vikings

CERRO GORDO — The Red Springs volleyball team claimed a victory in four sets over West Columbus on Thursday.

The Lady Red Devils lost the first set, before winning the final three to claim the match. Kelsey Locklear tallied 15 assists, with Sanastasia Powell adding seven kills, Kyria Locklear adding seven digs and Katelyn Culbreth contributing five blocks.
