RED SPRINGS — After going into halftime down by 12, Red Springs trimmed the St. Pauls lead down to single digits, but couldn’t close the deal as Cole Humphrey led the Bulldogs to a 63-48 win on the road to open up Three Rivers Conference play.

Humphrey had a game-high 17 points and a pair of buckets in the third quarter to push the St. Pauls (3-2) lead out after Red Springs (1-3) came back to within 36-30 at the three-minute mark of the quarter. J.J Oxendine added 15 points and Romeo Jordan added 11 points for the Bulldogs.

Caleel Mitchell and Eriq McBryde had 11 each for the Red Devils. Mitchell had five steals and McBryde added eight boards.

In the varsity girls game, Taya Jones had a game-high 22 points in the Lady Red Devils’ 66-21 win over St. Pauls.

Victoria Henderson and Taylynn Atkinson had 10 points apiece and Sha’nia Leach added eight points and eight rebounds for Red Springs (3-2).

St. Pauls (0-5) was led by Mysiah McAllister with seven points.

Red Springs plays at South Robeson and Red Springs travels to East Columbus on Tuesday.

Fairmont sweeps to open season

ROWLAND — The Fairmont boys basketball team used an 8-0 run out of the half to shake off South Robeson and open the season with a 75-64 conference road win.

South Robeson led 28-27 at the intermission before the Golden Tornadoes outscored the Mustangs by 10 points in the third. Jarique Moore had 26 points to lead all scorers. Julius Caulder had a double-double of 12 points and 11 boards and Corey Addison had 16 points for the Golden Tornadoes.

Cameron Werrell had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs.

Fairmont’s girls won 55-44 over South Robeson with a stifling defense in the second half to win its first game of the season.

South Robeson was held to one basket in the third quarter as Fairmont went from three down at the half to up five going into the fourth quarter to earn the win. Mya Bellamy had 14 points, Kiara Page had a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds for Fairmont in the win.

Chania Troy had 12 points and 11 boards for the Mustangs, with most of her scoring coming after halftime.

In jayvee action, Fairmont’s girls won 34-30 and South Robeson’s boys won 50-42.
