ROWLAND — The St. Pauls varsity basketball teams earned a sweep of South Robeson on Tuesday, with the girls claiming their first victory of the season, 40-34, and the boys flexing in an 76-52 rout of the Mustangs.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-5, 1-2 TRC) used a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter to fend off the Lady Mustangs (1-2, 0-2 TRC), who led 21-16 at the half.

Mysiah McAllister score 10 points to lead St. Pauls, with Grace Hall adding nine points and 14 rebounds. Chyna Tatum tallied eight points and nine boards for the Bulldogs, who jumped out to a 12-0 lead before a South Robeson rally that included a 14-0 run in the second quarter.

Nytia Lewis notched a double-double for the Lady Mustangs, scoring 11 points to go with 15 rebounds. Hailey Werrell added eight points and a game-best 19 boards for South Robeson, which finished the game with an 65-49 rebounding edge.

In boys action, the Bulldogs used a pair of 20-point quarters to earn the blowout win.

J.J. Oxendine scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead St. Pauls (4-2, 2-0 TRC), which used a 14-0 run in the first quarter to take the lead for good.

Cameron Werrell scored 10 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Mustangs (0-3, 0-2 TRC).

Cole Humphrey, Aaron Revels, Romeo Jordan, Ted McNeill and Isaiah Harlee finished with nine points each for St. Pauls.

In jayvee action, the St. Pauls girls won 31-20 and the South Robeson boys claimed an 42-32 victory.

Red Springs boys win, girls lose at East Columbus

LAKE WACCAMAW — The Red Springs varsity basketball teams split at East Columbus on Tuesday, with the boys finishing strong in an 63-50 win and the girls faltering from the free-throw line in an 57-54 loss to the Gators.

Monte’ Wilkerson scored 19 points to lead the Red Devils (2-3, 1-1 TRC), who closed the game with a pair of 20-point quarters to widen the margin. Caleel Mitchell and Eric Graham added 11 points each for Red Springs.

In girls action, the Lady Red Devils missed 21 free throws en route to the three-point loss. Taya Jones notched a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Sha’nia Leach added eight points, seven rebounds and six steals, with Taylynn Atkinson contributing 10 points and eight boards.

Lumberton girls, 71st boys grab non-conference wins

LUMBERTON — Behind a strong first quarter that included 11 points from Marlena McClure, the Lumberton girls basketball team moved to 5-0 on the young season with a 66-41 win at home over Seventy-First.

The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 22-8 lead after the first frame and never looked back. McClure finished with a game-high 15 points. London Thompson had 12 points and Jasmine McBride added 11 as the guard duo took over in the third with a combined 17 of the team’s 20 points.

In the boys varsity game, Seventy-First’s length and athleticism disrupted the Lumberton offense to force 20 turnovers en route to the Falcons grabbing a 76-61 win on the road.

Freshman Jordan McNeill had nine points in the first quarter to lead Lumberton to an 18-14 at the end of the quarter, but Seventy-First held the Pirates to six points in the second quarter to go into halftime up four points and stretched it out the rest of the contest.

Tyreik McCallum finished with 16 points, seven rebound, five blocks and three steals in the game. McNeill added 13 points and four steals, while Braylan Grice finished with a 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Rams and Pirate wrestling grab top 5 finishes

SHALLOTTE — With top medalists from Purnell Swett and one from Lumberton, both programs secured top five finishes as a team at the Caleb Hawkins Round Robin tournament held at West Brunswick High School on Saturday.

The Rams finished fourth as a team and the Pirates finished fifth.

Purnell Swett’s Will Deese won the 132-pound class and Jon Locklear earned the 145-pound crown. Rommie McNeill, Millard Lockler, Jastan Simmons and Ronald McNeill also placed at the tournament.

Lumberton’s Jaden Jenkins beat out Rommie McNeill for the 138 crown in an ultimate tie breaker. July Soe, Chris Kelly, Armando Marquez and Derrick McCall each finished second in their respective weight classes.
