AUGUSTA, Ga. — Rousing performances from both the mound and the plate over the weekend have earned a pair of UNC Pembroke baseball players weekly accolades from the Peach Belt Conference. Junior Anthony Burke was named the PBC Pitcher of the Week, while Seth Hartings earned the league’s Freshman of the Week award.

Burke, a native of Fredericksburg, Va., struck out 10 and allowed just two hits over seven scoreless innings of work as the Braves tacked up a 22-0 series-opening victory over 2016 Northeast 10 Tournament finalist Saint Rose on Friday. He faced four or less batters in five different frames, and retired the sides in order in the first, fifth and sixth innings. He also retired eight-straight batters at one point in the middle frames.

Hartings, a Sherrills Ford product, hit .556 (.559) with four extra-base hits (1 HR) and five RBI in the first two games of the series with the Golden Knights. He opened up the weekend by registering a perfect 4-for-4, 5-RBI hitting line that saw him belt a pair of doubles and one home run. He also scored four times in the 22-0 win. Hartings capped off his weekend by doubling and scoring twice on a 1-for-4 performance in game two of the series.

The Braves (9-1) will continue a 10-game home stand on Wednesday when they suit up to battle region rival Lenoir-Rhyne (11-1) in a 3 p.m. contest at Sammy Cox Field.

Women’s golf tackles 36 holes at Lady Moc Golf Classic

LAKELAND, Fla. — For the first time in the 2016-17 season, the UNC Pembroke golf squad played two competitive rounds in a single day, as the Black & Gold took to the course for the first 36 holes of the Lady Moc Golf Classic hosted by Florida Southern in Lakeland.

The Braves (+51) carded scores of 312 and 315 in the first two rounds on the par-72, 6,085-yard Grasslands Golf and Country Club course in central Florida. UNCP’s opening round 312 was tied for 11th in the 18-team field, but the Black & Gold fell into 13th at the conclusion of Monday’s second round.

Barry (+17) leads the highly competitive field with 18 holes to play, while eight other schools from Florida round out the top nine slots. Peach Belt Conference (PBC) member Flagler (+28) sits sixth and league members Montevallo (+44) and Armstrong State (+44) are tied for 11th.

Senior Ashlii Thompson (+10) leads all Braves with rounds of 79 and 75 Monday to share 32nd with four others in the 98-player field. Freshman Katy Flax (+12) fired 75-81 to grab a share of 41st, while junior Savannah Thompson (+16) is tied for 54th after rounds of 81 and 79. Sophomore Alexandria Bare (+17) shot 77-84 and is among a three-way tie for 60th and junior Amanda Levy (+19) sits in a tie for 66th with rounds of 83 and 80 Monday.

Barry’s Tilda Larsson (-1) is atop the individual leaderboard and is the only player under par, while Rollins’ Paige Lyle (E) is one shot off the lead. Larsson is just the third player in tournament history, dating back to 1998, to enter the final round at under par and both others went on to claim victory.

The 54-hole tournament will conclude with the third and final round Tuesday.
