Purnell Swett caps off sweep of Scotland

LAURINBURG — Behind a solid pitching outing from Ryan Graham, the Purnell Swett baseball team defeated Scotland to earn its second win of the week over the Scots with a 2-1 win on the road on Friday.

Graham threw a complete game one-hitter and struck out eight batters in doing so. Chay Locklear had four hits to lead the Rams (7-4, 2-0 SEC) and McKinley Strickland had a home run. Strickland, Graham, Dakota Locklear and Ethan Chavis each had a hit.

Scotland’s (7-2, 0-2 SEC) Matt Hyatt had a RBI hit in the bottom of the seventh to spoil the no-hitter.

St. Pauls’ uses late surge to top Vikings

CERRO GORDO — The St. Pauls baseball team scored four runs in the final three innings to top West Columbus 4-2 on the road.

J.J. Oxendine threw a complete game and struck out six to earn the win. At the plate, the Bulldogs (10-1, 4-1 TRC) had Ted McNeill go 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Aaron Revels tallied two hits to score a run and knock another run in. Jordan Thomas and Connor Harris each had a hit.

In other Three Rivers Conference baseball action, Whiteville topped South Robeson 14-2 in five innings.

Lumberton softball sneaks by Lady Patriots

SOUTHERN PINES — Lumberton’s Rachel O’Neil plated the go ahead run on a sac fly in the seventh inning to lift the Lady Pirates to a 5-4 Southeastern Conference win at Pinecrest.

Entering the seventh inning down 4-2, Lumberton (7-2, 2-0 SEC) scored three runs with the top of their lineup, capped off with O’Neil scoring LeAnn Nobles for one of her two RBIs in the game.

Morgan Britt struck out 13 batters in the circle and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and triple to help her cause. Nobles had a double and two RBIs and Madison Canady went 2-for-3.

Pinecrest’s (4-4, 0-2 SEC) Jordan Blake had a home run.

Pinecrest rides Pry’s homer to win over Pirates

SOUTHERN PINES — Pinecrest’s Nick Pry delievered on the mound and at the plate to lift the Patriots to a 3-1 conference win over Lumberton.

Pry went 1-for-3 at the plate with a home run and two RBIs or the Patriots (8-2, 2-0 SEC) and struck out eight batters in his seven innings on the hill.

Kris Allen went 2-for-2 for Lumberton (2-7, 0-2 SEC) and A.J. Brooks took the loss on the mound to go along with his one RBI.

East Columbus slips past Fairmont

LAKE WACCAMAW — Two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning from the East Columbus softball team helped it defeat Fairmont 10-9 at home.

The lead changed hands five times in the game with Fairmont (0-7, 0-6 TRC) scoring six runs in the top of the third and East Columbus (8-1, 5-1 TRC) answering with six in the bottom of the fourth.

Fairmont’s MacKenzie Johnson and Grace McMillian each went 3-for-4 at the plate and added an RBI. Kaylee McMillian went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs.

Arianna Daniels went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs for the Lady Gators. Mallory Carter was the winning pitcher.

In baseball action, East Columbus won 5-2 over Fairmont.

Scotland softball too much for Lady Rams

LAURINBURG — The Purnell Swett softball team fell at Scotland by a 8-3 score on Friday.


The Lady Rams were led at the plate by Magan Barton, who had a two-run homer to tie the game at three in the top of the third inning. Madison Strickland added two hits and an RBI, while Kaitlyn Hunt and Kierra Locklear also added two hits each.
