Lumberton soccer tops Village Christian

LUMBERTON — Behind goals from Harley Wilkerson and Christina Dickerson, the Lumberton girls soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Village Christian Academy in a weather-shortened game on Thursday.

Madison Sirmans finished with one assist for the Lady Pirates (8-6-1), who carried a 2-0 lead into the half before the game was called.

Lumberton carries momentum into spring break, rebounding from an 0-6-1 start.

Rams take over SEC standings with win at Hoke

RAEFORD — With a 10-0 at Hoke County and a Pinecrest loss at Richmond Senior, the Purnell Swett baseball team took sole possession of first place in the Southeastern Conference standings.

The Rams (11-6, 6-2 SEC) have won three straight conference games and outscored Hoke County 21-0 in the two-game series this week.

Ryan Graham pitched a gem and helped out his own cause at the plate for the Rams. The senior pitched six shutout innings and struck out 13 batters, while also hitting 2-for-3 on the night with three RBIs. Chay Locklear had two hits and two RBIs for Purnell Swett as well.

In other SEC action, Lumberton lost 11-2 to Scotland in baseball.

Seventh inning rally lifts Purnell Swett

RAEFORD — The Purnell Swett softball team scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Hoke County 11-10.

Kaitlyn Hunt scored Magan Barton to cap off the inning with the game-winning score.

The Lady Rams (6-11, 1-7 SEC) were led at the plate by Hunt with a pair of hits and three RBIs. JaiLeana Deese had three hits and an RBI, Hunter Bullard had two hits and two RBIs, Kierra Locklear had a pair of hits and two RBIs and Barton and Madison Strickland each added an RBI. Chelsea Jones picked up the win in the circle for her first high school win.

Lumberton tops Scotland in extras

LAURINBURG — After an hour rain delay and extra innings, the Lumberton softball team defeated Scotland on the road, 5-4, in 10 innings.

The only lead the Lady Pirates took in the game came in the top of the 10th inning. LeAnn Nobles had the game-winning RBI single to score Kasey West.

In the top of the seventh, Ariel Allbrooks had a two-run double with two outs to force extra innings. Erin Maynor had two RBIs on a double in the fifth inning.

Pitcher Morgan Britt struck out 19 batters in the win.
