To the Editor,

I would like to comment on the Your View in the Christmas Day edition of your paper titled “Yes, Virginia.” It is well known that The Robesonian newspaper has for years supported the Empty Stocking fund and other worthwhile activities in support of children’s causes. It should therefore not come as a surprise when the editorial on Christmas morning devoted attention to Santa’s existence.

Many cynics exist but thankfully there are many more believers that Santa Claus is alive and well. I have been reminded of this each of the past five Christmas Eves as the fire department of my community has rolled out our fire truck and escorted Santa to dozens of homes and thrilled hundreds of wide-eyed children. What kid would ever think that Santa Claus would personally visit them at their home while they were still awake and give them a gift and a hug?

What made my belief in Santa crystal clear occurred on our first year of these visits. Standing in the dark front yard of a home we had taken Santa to visit, I was approached by a young boy about 10 years old who walked up and stood next to me. After a minute he asked if that was Santa in the house, to which I replied of course it was. He asked if it was the real Santa, to which I replied that there was only one Santa and that was him. He asked me if I thought it would be OK if he hugged Santa and I said sure. I put my hand on his shoulder and together we walked to the foot of the home’s steps and waited together.

When Santa descended the steps, this little boy stepped forward and put a huge bear hug on Santa waist. After what seemed like an eternity, he let go, stepped back, looked up at Santa and said, “I love you, Santa.” His mission complete, he turned and returned toward the apartment complex located next door. I wish I had asked him name. Both Santa and my eyes locked and I will carry this precious Christmas moment in my heart forever; it is my greatest Christmas moment, ever.

Of course there is a Santa Claus. Shame on those who don’t believe so. Compliments to The Robesonian for backing up that belief with support for those who are Santa’s biggest fans, the kids.
