Have you heard the good news? The governor and the Council of State are thinking big again. Windmills are coming to North Carolina and bringing: 400 new jobs, $1 million per year to the landowners, and enough electricity to supply 55,000 homes.
This could be the best idea since the Southport International Seaport. So what’s not to like?
Plenty. Besides the adverse environment impact to waterfowl as well as sound and visual pollution to pristine coastal landscapes, wind power costs about three times as much as power generated from natural gas. The average increase in utility bills alone could amount to $500 a year. Multiply that times 55,000 and that’s about $70,000 per job.
Wait a minute? Isn’t this just another tax in disguise?
Bingo dumb taxpayer. Besides the lottery, gasoline tax, personal income tax, corporate tax, sales tax, you can add the windmill tax. And we’re still $1.5 billion short.
Affectionately known as the Queen of Concrete, our governor can now add her new moniker: Queen of Deceit.
