LUMBERTON — A seminar titled GAP Training for Tier 1 that focuses on food safety in the field will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 26 at the O.P. Owens Agriculture Center.

GAP stands for good agricultural practices. The seminar will include information that will help people who grow produce get it to the market in good shape, and will focus on areas such as safety, packing, sanitation, hygiene and water quality.

LUMBERTON — Members of the Lumberton FFA recently participated in the annual Winter Literacy and Barbeque Festival at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. They were given a tour of the campus and met with several professors at the university.

Members who participated were Melanie Catalan; Natasha Bryant; Edgar Barnes; Ashley Smith; Amber Wortham; Amber Adcox; Dustin Nance; Norman Deese; Keisha Locklear; Monitorial Walters; and Katy Patterson.

LUMBERTON — A free Global Positioning Systems workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday in the Workforce Development Center’s BB&T Conference room at Robeson Community College.

The workshop will teach attendees how to boost farm productivity and expand farm operations.

LUMBERTON — David Bass represented the Lumberton FFA recently at the State Tractor Driving competition in Raleigh.

He finished 12th out of 34 competitors. The competition required Bass to correctly back a trailor for 40 feet with 6 inches of clearance on each side, drive it through a figure-eight course, and back it into a shelter with 3 inches of clearance on each side.

LUMBERTON — The Robeson County extension is collecting information and photos for a book to show the past dairy industry in the area.

LUMBERTON — The North Carolina A&T Cooperative Extension Program will hold a tour of two small farms to celebrate Small Farms Week on March 24. The tour will leave the O.P. Owens Agriculture Center at 1:15 p.m. and return at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.

LUMBERTON — Hospitality training will be held at the Cooperative Extension Center on N.C. 72 West on April 11 and April 14.

The training, which lasts from 1 to 4:30 p.m. both days, will teach business owners and managers, front-line employees and those interested in promoting tourism in Robeson County how to provide quality customer service.
