Cook finalist for Miss N.C. pageant
CHARLOTTE — Lakayla Korrine Cook, the daughter of Tommy and Lakola Cook of Lumberton, is a state finalist in the National American Miss North Carolina Pageant.
She will compete in the pageant on June 30 in Charlotte.
Homecoming 5K run, walk July 2
PEMBROKE — The 30th annual Lumbee Homecoming 5K Run and Fun Walk will be held on July 2 at the LRDA Office complex.
Registration is from 6 to 7 a.m., and the race begins at 7:15 a.m. The race, which honors James Arthur Jones, a retired educator, coordinated by the Pembroke Kiwanis Club. There will be trophies for first, second and third place in each age category.
Advance registration is $15 at LRDA and is $20 on the event’s day.
Participants get a free T-shirt.
Walkers can participate at no cost.
Later in the day, there will be a free event at 1 p.m. at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke Activities Center that also honors Jones, who was a World War II veteran.

Celebrate Lumber River Day July 16
LUMBERTON — The second annual Celebrate Lumber River Day will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on July 16 at Lumber River State Park.
There will be canoe and boat rides, display booths, exhibits, dancers, a tractor parade, dulcimer lessons, artists, horseshoes, wet T-shirt races for kids, fishing contests for kids, face-painting, prizes and giveaways.
The Lumbee Ambassadors will be at the event as well.
