Fresh off back-to-back losses, the Lumberton baseball team got back to its winning ways Tuesday, downing Terry Sanford 4-2 in Two Rivers Conference action.
Playing the stopper for the Pirates (11-2, 4-0 TRC) was starting pitcher Matt McIntyre, who notched a complete game while allowing just one earned run. McIntyre (5-0) also struck out five and walked three in the win.
"We backed up Matt out there today," Lumberton head coach Paul Hodges said. "Every time Matt takes the mound we feel like we have a chance to win."
Lumberton actually trailed 2-0 until Adrian Locklear's RBI single in the top of the fifth inning scored Patrick Pait. Locklear then did a little improvising on the basepaths, stealing second and third, then scoring on a passed ball to make it 2-2.
The Bulldogs couldn't hold the Pirates off the scoreboard in the next inning either, as pinch hitter A.J. Keating delivered a clutch run-scoring single to plate Scott Taylor. Keating then took advantage of an error to score the final run of the contest.
Terry Sanford tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, but center fielder Matt Hunt's diving catch, which resulted in a double play, ended any chance of a rally.
Next up for Lumberton is a Two Rivers Conference clash on the road at Pine Forest on Friday.
On Saturday, the Pirates will host an alumni game at noon. Any former Lumberton players are invited to play.
Lady Pirates blank Sanford
FAYETTEVILLE -- Dominique Brooks kept her stellar season going Tuesday, pitching the Lumberton softball team to a 6-0 romp over Terry Sanford in Two Rivers Conference action.
It was the third shutout of the season for Brooks (11-1), who struck out six in the complete-game effort.
Hannah Hayes did the most damage for the Lady Pirates (13-1, 3-1 TRC), registering a 2-for-4 day to go along with two stolen bases and an RBI. Teammate Sierra Brooks also chipped in at the plate with an RBI double.
Janelle Romeo (2-6) took the loss for the Bulldogs (2-6, 0-4).
Bulldogs bounce Lady Pirates' soccer
FAYETTEVILLE -- It was a promising start for the Lumberton girls soccer team Tuesday, but it didn't end that way.
Lumberton's Jana Currie scored just 30 seconds into the team's Two Rivers Conference showdown with Terry Sanford, but the Pirates (6-5, 2-1 TRC) couldn't hold on in a 5-2 defeat.
Up 2-1 at the half, the Bulldogs put two more goals on the scoreboard before Lumberton's Jennifer Costa found the back of the net to cut the lead to 4-2.
It wouldn't be enough, however, as the Bulldogs (8-2, 2-0) scored their fifth goal to end any thoughts of a comeback.
"It was a promising start, but the game was a struggle," Lumberton head coach Kenny Simmons said. "We had some difficulty matching up with them physically."
