To the Editor,
While I was at the county dump-site on Lamb Road recently, I noticed an old wheelbarrow sticking out of one of the Dumpsters. It was in great shape except for one broken handle. I asked the attendant if I could take it home as it would be an easy fix and we could use another one. She said, “No, it belongs to the county.” I said, “But the county doesn’t even know they own it.” She countered with, “Sorry, that’s the rules.”
What were they smoking when they adopted rules such as this? If the county is worried about someone getting hurt while removing an item, simply have that person sign a form releasing the county of any liability. If the county sells this so-called trash for 10 to 15 cents a pound, the income probably doesn’t even pay the attendant’s wages or the cost of the truck and driver who hauls it off. I thought our tax dollars went toward funding these operations anyhow.
In addition, I also noticed a complete set of sturdy lawn chairs in the same Dumpster. All they needed was a coat of paint and some new cushions.
My suggestion is to make items such as the above available for the taking by the residents of the area the site serves.
