To the Editor,
The headline in the June 24 edition of The Robesonian concerning the DMV Office was shocking. It shows how callous our government can be and how dumb some of their decisions are.
For more than 30 years the Beasley family has served North Carolina and the public. Helen Beasley has served North Carolina, Robeson County, Lumberton and outlying areas for 30 years and after Helen’s death the way DMV thanks the family is by kicking them out. Ouida and Charles, plus two other faithful employees, have given 60 plus years of service to North Carolina and Robeson County. And how do we thank them? By not considering “family” as a contract renewal. And by not listening to our elected officials. Sen. Michaeal Walters and Rep. G.L Pridgen both supported the Beasleys in the renewal contract.
Where is the office hoping to move? To Lackey Street, west of I-95. Where did our Veterans Clinic get moved to against common sense? West of I-95. Our county commissioners could smell what was coming but they did not get involved or take a stand to support the Beasleys.
I differ with DMV’s answer, “It was reviewed as any new application.” Folk, it was not a new application it was a family trying to maintain their livelihood because of the death of their mother.

I'm tottering back and forth on this one.
For one the Beasley family HAD to know their mother was aging and that the contract was in her name only AND they had to know the specifics of the contract. Which means they had to know that unless they added their names to the current contract that when the contract holder passed away, they would be applying as a new party. Why didn't they add names to the contract during the last renewal period? Why chance something like this? Seems like poor planning.
My personal experiences with this agency have not been very good. Frankly they were not very friendly. I never expected them to be gushing over customers but I have seen and heard them very short and unprofessional over the last 30 odd years. Not every time I went in, no. Most times they were like robots, not speaking except to tell you what you owed and holler 'next'. Makes you really want to drive to the neighboring town to do business.
I don't know the new guy who got the contract, but he applied the same as the children of the old contract holder. So many people gripe and moan about others getting special treatment and now people are saying he got special treatment? Wouldn't it have been special treatment if they'd given the Beasley children the contract simply because their mother had it for so many years?
Can't have it both ways folks.
