The library has just completed a redesign of our website. Check us out at robesoncountylibrary.org.

On the home page, front and center, you will find out “What’s Happening” at the library.

Right now our big news is the Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale taking place from Oct. 11 to Oct. 13. You will also find information about the library’s free ongoing basic computer classes.

Are you interested in learning a foreign language? The library now offers online language learning with Pronunciator. You will find the link to get started right on the home page. A little farther down the page, you’ll find links to many community resources such as the Lumberton Visitors Bureau, CHEC: Community Health Education Center and the Lumberton History Museum. You can also sign up to receive our newsletter.

The calendar is where you will find information about times and locations for all library activities. Katie Huneycutt, the youth services librarian, is on the road all over the county presenting story times and other activities. Check the calendar to see when she is in your community.

Popular opinion seems to think that Google has the answer to everything, but if you want the real answers, go to our online research page. Your library provides free access to paid subscription databases available through NC Live.

Are you taking the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test and need some prep? We’ve got it right under “Career, Jobs and Test Prep.” Thinking of starting a business? Find the information you need under “Business and Management.”

Another thing too interesting to miss is NCpedia. It’s an online encyclopedia that has everything about North Carolina. To experiment, just type Civil War in the search bar. You will be amazed at all the interesting results you will get.

If you are interested in local history or genealogy, you will find lots to explore on the local history page. I recommend that you spend some time looking at the Sandborn Maps. In less than a minute, I found a map of Lumberton from June 1893. We also have links to genealogy charts to help you get started on your research.

About RCPL provides library locations, hours and telephone numbers. You will find email addresses to contact us, copies of library policies, and even a Google map to guide you to every library in the Robeson County Public Library system.

The website also has information for children, teens and readers of all ages. Drop by for a visit — you will be glad you did. Also, don’t forget to stop by the brick-and-mortar library to get a library card. It’s the key to a world of information.

The Pembroke Public Library will be showing “The Hunger Games” movie on Thursday at 5 p.m. Youths in sixth through 12th grade are invited to attend.

The Rowland Public Library will be showing “The Lorax” movie on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Children of all ages are welcome to attend.

Catie Roche is the director of the Robeson County Public Library. You can reach her at croche@robesoncountylibrary.org.
