RED SPRINGS — The Red Springs Board of Commissioners on Wednesday approved applying for a grant that could provide funding for affordable housing and elimination of environmental hazards.

The board made the decision to move forward with the grant application during a special meeting called in order to hold a public hearing. Herb Beckwood, who is not a resident of Red Springs, spoke in favor of the application, according to Town Manager James Bennett.

“He said there was a need for additional low to moderate housing in Red Springs,” Bennett said.

The grant is a part of the Catalyst program, which uses Community Block Development Grant funds from the United States Department of Housing. The grant application requires that funds be used to benefit low and moderate income people and eliminate slums, blight and threats to public health.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, the board approved a three-year update of Robeson County’s Solid Waste Plan.
