he Robeson County Public Library will be hosting focus group discussions to help us improve our services and plan for the future. The public is encouraged to attend and share opinions. Discussions will be held at the Robeson County Public Library on Nov. 26, at the Pembroke Public Library on Nov. 27, and at the Annie Hubbard McEachern Library in St. Pauls on Nov. 29. Meetings are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at each location and will last approximately 90 minutes. Door prizes will be awarded.

The library is committed to providing the best quality services possible to the citizens of Robeson County. Our library operates with funds provided by the county, city governments and with State Aid to Public Libraries. This is funding provided by your tax dollars and it is important to the Library Administration and Board of Trustees that, as we create our long-range plan, we are aware and able to respond to the needs and wishes of the community. We need your input.

The library is doing some research to determine how to provide the best services. Should we be buying e-books? Do we have enough popular fiction or should we be collecting more biographies? Maybe we need to be open longer hours or have more computers. Participating in a focus group will help us answer these questions.

Additionally, you can express your opinions by filling out a survey. The library survey is available online at www.robesoncountylibrary.org and in paper format at all of our branches. It only takes a few minutes to complete and your answers provide information we can use to improve how we operate. Thank you for your input.

Catie Roche is the director of the Robeson County Public Library. You can reach her at croche@robesoncountylibrary.org. Catie is reading “Where’d you go Bernadette,” by Maria Semple.

The biggest thing that the library in lumberton needs is to replace the local history librarian and improve the local history room. Mike Sloop was the last person was the last real librarian and the room has gone to hell in a hand basket since then, presumably to feed the insatiable appetite for Internet access, and garbage novels.

Please replace this vital staff position and start putting money in resources for this room again. It alone could be a heritage tourism attraction, as there are many who trace their ancestry back to Robeson and the Lumbee Tribe.

I hope that many go to the focus group and underscore this message, but if not, at least post here please. I hope the library board will listen
