LUMBERTON — An employee of Campbell Soup and one with the Public Schools of Robeson County are the latest qualifiers for the raffle to win a new ride in the United Way Car Giveaway.

The names of Shirley Strickland and Rose Freeman were pulled from a cylinder filled with the names of almost 900 fair-share at Lumberton Chevrolet on Tuesday. Neither could be reached.

The two qualified in the drawing because they are both fair-share givers — meaning they contribute at least the equivalent of one hour’s pay a month to United Way.

Strickland works at Campbell Soup Co. According to Sandra Oliver, executive director of the United Way of Robeson County, Campbell Soup Co. is the second largest contributor in the fair-share program.

They became the seventh and eighth finalists among 20 who will participate in a reverse-raffle in December at Biggs Park Mall. The last person standing will pick an envelope that will tell them which car they will drive away in — either a Chevrolet Spark, Nissan Versa, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris.

Drawings are held on Tuesdays and rotate at the participating dealerships — Lumberton Chevrolet, Lumberton Honda, Terry Chapin Nissan, Peterson Toyota and Fair Bluff Ford. The next drawing will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Fair Bluff Ford.

The United Way’s campaign goal is $715,000. It is not too late to become eligible for the United Way Car Giveaway. For information on how to become a fair-share giver, call the United Way at 910-739-4249.
