LUMBERTON — After briefly explaining the process for recording votes from the Nov. 6 General Election, the Robeson County Board of Elections recessed Wednesday’s board meeting until today at 3 p.m., according to Dock Locklear, the county’s Board of Elections director.

Locklear said that the board took no action on Wednesday. Provisional ballots and some overseas military ballots are scheduled to be counted today, he said.

“We’ve processed about 2,200 provisional ballots,” Locklear said. “Of that number, not all qualify to be counted.”

Voters cast provisional ballots when there is a question about their eligibility to vote. Instances when a provisional ballot is used include: a voter’s name doesn’t appear on the electoral roll for the given precinct; a voter’s ballot has already been recorded; or a voter’s registration contains inaccurate or out-dated information such as a misspelled name or a wrong address.

Locklear said that the Board of Elections will also meet at 2 p.m. on Friday to canvass and certify election results. Candidates then have until Nov. 20 to request a recount, he said.

The local count could potentially affect the outcome of the race between incumbent Rep. Mike McIntyre and state Sen. David Rouzer in congressional District 7.

Candidates in the Lumbee tribal elections held this week have until Tuesday at 5 p.m. to request a recount.

The Fayetteville Observer reported this morning that the chairwoman of the tribe’s Elections Board, Carvicous Barfield, said she does not anticipate any candidate asking for a recount in any of the elections held Tuesday when Chairman Paul Brooks was re-elected for another three-year term and seven district council seats were filled. The election results for all tribal elections are expected to be made official on Tuesday, Barfield said.
