PEMBROKE — Dwayne Fairley hit two clutch free throws with 1.8 seconds left, lifting the Red Springs boys’ basketball team to a 58-56 road win over Purnell Swett on Wednesday.

Swett’s James Chavis flung a half-court shot at the buzzer but it clanked off the front rim. Corey Okonokwo and Quinn Lowery led the Red Devils (1-1) with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Lowery converted on a key putback with 23.2 seconds left to put Red Springs up 56-54. Tyler Maynor, who knotted the game back up 56-56 on a pair of free throws, poured in a game-high 20 points for the Rams (1-3). Maynor and Swett managed just four field goals in the first half but went 17-of-24 from the free throw line.

Chavis added 17 points for the Rams.

Lady Red Devils top Swett

Jasmine Murchison’s 16 points anchored the Red Springs girls’ basketball team to a 44-38 road win over Purnell Swett.

Leading by one in the fourth quarter, Murchison and the Lady Red Devils, who led 25-15 at halftime, used a 5-0 run to pull away from Swett for good. Despite shooting a dismal 12-of-29 from the free throw line, Red Springs hit 3-of-4 down the stretch cement the 44-38 win. Swett struggled even more from the stripe, hitting just 12-of-29. Rocio Pecina chipped in 11 points and Robyn Mcphaul added 10 for Red Springs (2-0).

Colleen Chavis led the Lady Rams (1-3) with 15 points.

ST. PAULS — Shaking off a subpar performance in Tuesday’s season opener, Deion Gilchrist scored 19 points to lead the St. Pauls boys’ basketball team to a 72-68 win over East Bladen on Wednesday at St. Pauls High.

Gilchrist, who struggled to four points in a win over West Bladen Tuesday, found his touch Wednesday, shooting 6-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-5 from beyond the 3-point line. The Bulldogs (2-0) led 37-30 at halftime.

Malik Livingston and Kane Banner followed Gilchrist’s lead with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Banner notched a double-double, adding 13 rebounds.
