The Fairmont boys basketball team, the tournament’s top-seed, fell in the opening round to Dillon in overtime, 74-66, on Wednesday night at Fairmont High School.
The Golden Tornadoes (4-3) gritted to overtime thanks to a pair of late 3-pointer from Kwinton Hinson. The sophomore forward hit a triple to put Fairmont up 52-49 and later — after a Dillon run — sent the game into overtime when he banked in a 3 at the buzzer with 1.7 seconds left on the clock.
In the extra session, however, the Wildcats caught fire. Up 63-62, Dillon (5-1) went on an 11-4 run the rest of the way, ending the game on a 5-for-8 showing at the free throw line. Hinson finished with a team-high 15 points, followed by Jackie Oxendine and Shemar Barfield with 14 apiece.
Shaqui Cabbagestalk poured in a game-high 26 points to lead Dillon. Fairmont drops to the Shootout losers bracket to face South Robeson at 7:30 p.m. today in Rowland. Dillon will play at Lumberton on Friday.
Fairmont girls squeeze by Dillon
Anasia Evans’ game-high 29 points helped lift the Fairmont girls basketball team to a 48-47 win over Dillon.
Evans and Fairmont led 45-36 with just under five minutes remaining before Dillon stormed back with a 9-0 run to tie it up with 1:10 left in regulation. From there, however, the Lady Golden Tornadoes won out at the charity stripe.
Evans sunk two free throws in the final minute to put Fairmont up 48-46. Dillon’s Khamele Manning had a chance to tie it with 8.1 seconds left, but she went 1-of-2 from the line and Evans snared the defensive rebound and dribbled out the clock.
Fairmont advances to Friday’s semifinals to face hosts Lumberton, while Dillon takes on South Robeson in Rowland tonight at 6.
