Fred Howell Sr., 96, a native of Lumberton, died Dec. 12, 2012, at Laurel’s Nursing Facility in Raleigh.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Sandy Grove Baptist Church in Lumberton. Interment will follow in Spring Branch Cemetery in Orrum.
He was the former operator of Howell’s Barber Shop and was the oldest surviving businessman of the early 1900’s in South Lumberton. He played golf here in the county and on other golf courses in the state.
Howell was the son of the late Garfield Howell and Ethel Alexander Howell.
He attended Redstone Academy and was active in the community and ran unsuccessful for Lumberton City Council in the early 1970’s. He was the widower of the Late Aquilla Gerald Howell.
He is survived by his daughter, Paula Howell Spence (Phil); a son, Fred Howell Jr. (Deborah), both of Raleigh; and several grandchildren.
The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at McMillan Funeral Home in Lumberton.
The family will receive friends noon Monday at the Church.
